John C. Reilly Set to Travel to Fox Searchlight's Cedar Rapids
September 30, 2009
by Ethan Anderton
Ever since John C. Reilly made a huge splash into the comedy world with Talladega Nights, he's been one of my favorite comedic actors. However, there's a very clear divide between those who simply love his brand of humor and those who hate it. After all his humor is basically a brother of Will Ferrell's trademark humor, and this became very clear when they combined their off-the-wall antics in Step Brothers. THR reports that Reilly will be bringing the funny along with Ed Helms (NBC's "The Office") in Cedar Rapids, an ensemble road-trip comedy from Miguel Arteta, director of The Good Girl and the upcoming film Youth in Revolt.
Cedar Rapids tells the story of "a wholesome and naive small-town Wisconsin man (Helms) who, when his role model dies, must represent his company at a regional insurance conference in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where his mind is blown by the big-town experience." Reilly's character is a family man who comes to the conference and takes the opportunity to live it up and really turn his party crank up to eleven. Ad Hominem Enterprises (the production company of Alexander Payne, Jim Taylor and Jim Burke) is behind the picture.
Personally I haven't been disappointed in any of Reilly's comedy roles from Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (which I thought had just the right amount of spoof a la the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker style of spoof and today's contemporary off-the-cuff nonsense comedy) up to his work in the indie flick The Promotion. Even if you don't like his brand of humor, there's no doubt that Reilly is an acting tour de force who has shown his acting chops in roles like his Oscar nominated performance in Chicago, great moments in Paul Thomas Anderon's Boogie Nights and even Magnolia. I'll be looking forward to this one. How about you?

It's the fucking Catalina Wine Mixer!
He is pretty hilarious, and yes, the fanbase is very clean cut on whether they love him or hate him. Looking forward to more.

Haha. This sounds great. The "big city" experience in Cedar Rapids huh? I'm from that area of Iowa and that town has only 35,000 or so people. Far from big city. But I guess thats probably part of the joke.

Him, and you people who admire him are what's wrong with the world.

I kind of disagree. I mean, the Reilly fan base that LIKES him is divided itself. Case in point, the Reilly of "8 the Hard Way" and "Boogie Nights" vs. stuff like T. Nights.

I really like John C. Reilly and I think he is hilarious, but I hope he never returns to the land of Cox. That was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Despite a few funny scenes (thanks to the "Beatles"), it fell way below expectations. I have like him in everything else, so hopefully this movie kicks @**.

I just love the fact that he is going to Cedar Rapids to party it up. I'm from around the area, and Cedar Rapids is pretty damn boring.
