Weinstein Company Halts Pre-Production on Halloween 3-D

Earlier this month it was announced that My Bloody Valentine director Patrick Lussier would be helming the fast-tracked Halloween 3-D for release next summer. But it looks like The Weinstein Company's Dimension Films might have bitten off more than they can chew, which isn't surprising considering the overwhelming amount of other projects they've got on their upcoming slate. Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood snagged a scoop on the sudden stop of pre-production on Halloween 3-D with a whole slew of potential reasons coming out of the woodwork. But she might have already gotten to the bottom of this.
Deadline points out "the rumor mill claims TWC is out of money amid all those layoffs, and TWC couldn't agree on a $2.5M budget battle with Lussier, and TWC had key crew ready to fly to Shreveport. But I [Finke] understand that Bob Weinstein shut down [Halloween 3-D] pre-production 'because Bob just felt it was rushing too fast.' This makes sense considering the film was being pushed into quick production because Patrick Lussier was going to be unavailable starting in January for an unnamed project for producer Avi Lerner. Still, this seems like an amateur mistake to make with a franchise that needs quite a bit of care to bring audiences back for more.
It's probably good that Dimension and the Weinstein's are taking a bit of a breather because it sounds like they're not holding up too well (apparently there's been talk about Summit Entertainment using a chunk of their money from The Twilight Saga to purchase TWC sometime). Either way, Dimension will be trying to cover their recent financial loss by re-releasing Rob Zombie's H2: Halloween II on the trick-or-treat holiday weekend in October, which is really when it should've been released from the start anyway. But who knows if anything or anyone can even save The Weinstein Company at this point. We'll keep you updated.

We in the UK are getting HA:2 this October and it never viewed before that. I loved what Zombie did with the first so here's hoping this second one is as good - p.s. Halloween 3D sounds like the worst idea ever - no wonder it got canned.
