Star Trek Sequel Will Reflect Contemporary Political Issues
By now we all know that a sequel to Star Trek is on the way, but we're going to be waiting until summer 2011 to see it. There haven't been any official script pages yet, but we do know that director J.J. Abrams and writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof (of "Lost" fame who has also been added to the writing team) have been tossing around some potential story ideas for the follow-up to the box office behemoth that has grossed over $383 million to date. The LA Times sat down with Abrams and Orci where they divulged a little bit more information regarding where the Enterprise crew will boldly go next.

Soderbergh Updates Us on Liberace, Cleo, and Limey Sequel
As I already mentioned earlier in regards to the Spalding Gray documentary, I just interviewed Steven Soderbergh last weekend up here in Toronto. The full interview will be up this weekend, but I wanted to write about a few of the updates that he told me, as I asked him about almost all of his upcoming projects. We've heard details off and on recently about all of them (the most recent update was just a few weeks ago), but Soderbergh gave us some solid details on three of his new projects, including that two of them are shooting next year, and one of them has all the funding that it needs to start shooting. Read on for more!

Nicole Kidman to Star in Tomas Alfredson's The Danish Girl
Last year, Tomas Alfredson directed, in my mind, one of the best films of the entire year: Let the Right One In. A haunting story exploring adolescence, alienation, and identity. Well, Alfredson's set to take man the helm again with another story exploring identity, though devoid of the supernatural. The Danish Girl is an adaptation of David Ebershoff's book, the account of Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe, who in 1931 was the first to receive a sex change operation, going from man to woman. Nicole Kidman has signed on to portray Wegener/Elbe, while Charlize Theron, who had been attached to play Wegener's wife, has dropped out.

Screenwriter Roger Avary Returning for Silent Hill Sequel
Somehow we missed this news from a few days back, but I wanted to write about it anyway. THR confirmed that screenwriter Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida of Davis Films would both be returning for the next Silent Hill sequel. I'm not sure if this is good news or bad. They trades are trying to play it off as good news, but will Avary actually write a script that doesn't suck this time? Or do they just need a better director than Christophe Gans to make sure it doesn't become another forgettable video game adaptation? Davis Films aims to shoot the movie next year after finishing Resident Evil 4, which they're now prepping.

Interview: Up in the Air's Jason Reitman on the Telluride Gondola
A few weeks back when I was at the Telluride Film Festival, my friend Peter Sciretta (of SlashFilm) and I caught up with Oscar nominated director Jason Reitman to talk about his new film Up in the Air, which we had both just seen (read my review). As you know, from my coverage of Telluride, the gondola at the resort was our main mode of transportation. So we decided to conduct our interview in the gondola as it was "up in the air" (get it!) during its 23 minute run from where we got on. Not only was that quite fun, but it was probably the best interview we've ever done, and it is a definite must watch (no spoilers in it either)!

Blogging Live from Toronto '09: Part 2 - Making Decisions
My apologies for the lack of coverage from the Toronto Film Festival in the past few days, as it has been pretty damn crazy up here. I always talk about my whereabouts and thoughts on films I've seen on Twitter, so head over there if you want to stay on top of everything from TIFF. One film I saw a few days ago was Mr. Nobody, a sci-fi drama starring Jared Leto. The film was about making decisions and it explained that in life, you have to make so many big decisions that you can't change, that sometimes it's best to not make a decision (it explores that idea in a fascinating way). And decisions are the biggest issue for me up here.

Zach Galifianakis Joins the Cast of It's Kind of a Funny Story
Zach Galifianakis exploded onto the screen this year in The Hangover. But the bearded comedian has been inspiring laughter for a long time, garnering quite a following while touring with Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn and Maria Bamford as part of The Comedians of Comedy. I've been following him for years, waiting for his career to take off. Now he's one of the most in-demand comedy actors working today, and he just added another project to his roster. THR reports Galifianakis has joined the cast of It's Kind of a Funny Story, a coming-of-age comedy from the writers/directors of Half-Nelson - Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.

Rachel Weisz is the Subject of Karyn Kusama's 'Body Horror'
Karyn Kusama, director of the upcoming Megan Fox horror vehicle Jennifer's Body, chatted some with io9 about what's lined up next in her directorial pipeline. And, apparently, she'll be holding fast to the horror genre - but this as yet unnamed script is a "psychological horror in the David Cronenberg tradition." Okay, Kusama. I'll bite. "[The script] definitely does fall into sort of a body horror movie that deals very, very specifically with our concept of gender. I can't really talk to you specifically about it other than to say that Rachel Weisz is attached to the film." Now you've got our attention! But what exactly is it about?

Jay Chandrasekhar Locked and Loaded for Shotgun Wedding
Jay Chandrasekhar, of Broken Lizard, has made a decent name for himself as a cult comedy director. After he had the hilarious Super Troopers under his belt (we'll just ignore Club Dread out of courtesy), he made the jump to a more mainstream comedy in the 2005 bland and uninspired Dukes of Hazzard. Luckily he followed it up with another worthy cult comedy in Beerfest. As of late, Chandrasekhar has spent a lot of time as a gun for hire directing episodes for Universal television series like "Psych" and "Chuck." Variety now reports his return to features directing Shotgun Wedding, comedy he co-wrote with David Gilcreast.

More New Posters: Toy Story 3, Goats, Dark Country, Saw VI
I tend to feature as many good posters as I find, and tonight we have four new ones that I just couldn't pass up. They're all great posters, each with their own unique offering, and all of them are worth checking out. First up, we have a teaser poster for Pixar's Toy Story 3, and uh, it's not that impressive. In fact, it's just a giant number 3. Up next is the poster for The Men Who Stare at Goats, which is actually a great poster, especially with the goat head in the back. Next is the poster for Thomas Jane's Dark Country, which we featured the trailer for previously. And lastly, yet another poster for Saw VI, featuring a creepy new trap.

Shawn Levy Bringing Futuristic Robot Boxing in Real Steel
Fighting robots have been a hot commodity as the success of both Transformers movies have proven. Hell, before the Autobots and Decepticons were battling on the big screen, I was a big fan of the small-screen robotic battles highlighted every week on the short-lived "BattleBots." Apparently even without the cameras rolling these battles still happen amongst the most gifted electrical engineers. But another form of robot combat will be hitting the screen with the announcement of director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) helming Real Steel, a film about a father and son who take a robot to the Bot Boxing Championship.

Sharlto Confirmed for A-Team, Jessica Biel Also Joining
One of the most interesting casting news stories of last week was about District 9's Sharlto Copley joining the cast of Joe Carnahan's A-Team movie. As Sharlto's big follow-up to D9, it was a very interesting casting choice. I admit that I was hoping it was all false because he deserves to move on to bigger and better, but it turns out it's the truth. THR has confirmed today that Sharlto is indeed "in negotiations" to join the cast as "Howling Mad" Murdock. Also joining the A-Team cast is Jessica Biel in the lead female role as Faceman's former lover, "an Army general who is now pursuing the team." Production begins this fall in Vancouver.
