Soderbergh and MMA Actress Set to 'Knockout' Audiences

Gina Carano

Steven Soderbergh's latest film The Informant! just premiered at the Venice Film Festival a few days ago and will open in wide release starting on September 18th, but the writer/director is already busy on his next project. Variety reports Soderbergh will next direct the spy thriller Knockout which will also see the feature film debut of Gina Carano (seen above), a mixed martial arts circuit fighter. The story (which is said to be a flat out action movie in James Bond fashion) follows a tough girl from the wrong side of the tracks who takes the opportunity to use a special set of skills in a more focused, constructive environment.

Blogging Live from Telluride: Part 1 - Mountains & Movies

Telluride Film Festival

After stepping out of Up in the Air and writing my review, I realized that I hadn't otherwise written about the Telluride Film Festival yet, which is shame because it's such a wonderful festival. It lasts for only 4 long days, but it takes place in a small, quaint mountain town, and I just love being here, especially as an oddly relaxing (or quieter) way to kick off my epic festival tour. As of writing this, I've seen only 5 films so far (more details on those below), but I just wanted to make sure I start a running tally / list of all the films I've seen on this trip. Although at least two of them are films that I'd already seen in Cannes previously.

Worth Watching: Awesome Live-Action Halo 3: ODST Trailer

Halo 3: ODST

Instead of featuring a normal trailer for a movie today, I thought I'd feature this amazingly badass trailer that Bungie / Microsoft made for Halo 3: ODST, the latest Halo game out in a few weeks (Amazon). This is exactly why I would love to see a full-on live-action Halo movie. They really should just hire the guy who made this and give him $200 million, a good script, and let him at it. I would love to see 2 hours of the kind of action seen in this. And although I know this is less than two-minutes, it's stories like this that could be the basis for a great screenplay set in the Halo universe. Anyway, if you haven't seen this yet, check it out!

Telluride 2009 Review: Jason Reitman's Up in the Air

George Clooney - Up in the Air

I've been waiting and waiting to see Jason Reitman's Up in the Air ever since it was first announced way back in May of 2008. And I just walked out of the first ever screening of the film tonight at the Telluride Film Festival. And I loved it. It's everything I wanted it to be, everything I was expecting, even after reading Walter Kirn's book that it's based on. Not only is it Reitman's most personal film to date, but it's his most polished as well. I have so many things to mention about it that I just wanted to get down my thoughts before they fade away. It really hit me on a very personal level as well, which is why I enjoyed it so much.

Sci-Fi Plot Revealed for Stallone's Rambo V: The Savage Hunt

Rambo 5 Poster

Just a few days ago news broke confirming that the fifth installment of Sylvester Stallone's Rambo series had been greenlit by Nu Image / Millennium Films and was already in the works (and even hard a storyline about human trafficking across the Mexico border). Well, hold on to your bandanas, because AICN's Harry Knowles just had a conversation with Mr. Stallone himself in which he reveals the shadows of what will become Rambo 5. First, we have an official title - Rambo V: The Savage Hunt - and a poster (a glimpse of it seen above). Second, well, this Rambo may prove to be a bit different than those four previous movies.

Brandon's Word: Gamer, Or the War on Brains Everywhere

Gamer Review

Crank directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor must really hate brain cells. This much is for sure. After the outrageous, but strangely satisfying romp that was Crank, and its follow up, the somehow even more outrageous but less satisfying Crank 2: High Voltage, they're back with their latest co-written, co-directed feature, Gamer, in theaters this weekend from Lionsgate. If before Neveldine and Taylor hated the idea of your, the audience's, brain, this time they're out to destroy the entire physical hunk of flesh floating between your ears. And that goes for both inside the film and inside the theater. Read on for Brandon's review!

Check This Out: First Clash of the Titans On-Set Footage!

Clash of the Titans

I knew this would be awesome! It's not much, but MTV debuted the first bit of footage from Clash of the Titans tonight, but it's a behind-the-scenes set visit video, so there's no finished footage. It features on-set interviews with Sam Worthington, Liam Cunningham, Mads Mikkelsen, and Gemma Arterton. There is a lot of awesome action, though, and it looks pretty badass, I've got a lot of faith in Louis Leterrier and I have a feeling this will be epic, although it won't have Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion action anymore (damn!). Anyway, check this out, it's a pretty good early first look, we hope to eventually see the first trailer soon!

Sound Off: Mike Judge's New Film Extract - Your Thoughts?

Extract

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Mike Judge is back! It may not be the summer anymore, but that doesn't mean there aren't any more good movies left to see. But is Extract any good? Office Space and "Beavis and Butthead" creator Mike Judge has been somewhat out of the loop for a while, give or take Idiocracy, which Fox quietly dumped a few years back. He returns today with his new film Extract, but is it even funny? Does it live up to Office Space? Is Jason Bateman as great of a lead as Ron Livingston this time? Sound off below, leave your thoughts, and let us know what you thought of Mike Judge's Extract!

Wonderful New Posters: Where the Wild Things Are & The Road

The Road

Instead of debuting any good trailers today, Hollywood has instead debuted a handful of new posters. We already featured the Bad Lieutenant poster earlier today and debuted the Fantastic Mr. Fox poster as well. Warner Brothers has also debuted one final poster for Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, and The Weinstein Company has debuted two gorgeous posters for John Hillcoat's The Road, which is showing at Telluride this weekend. That poster for Wild Things really captures all the childhood wonder of the film. And these two posters for The Road really capture all the bleakness of that film. Check them out below!

Steven Soderbergh Updates Cleo, Liberace, and Moneyball

Steven Soderbergh

The story of Steven Soderbergh this year is one of the most fascinating stories out of pretty much any filmmaker. We already know about the Moneyball fiasco, but besides that, he's put out two films this year, the second of which - The Informant! - hits next month, and he's trying to get back on track with another project (Cleo? Liberace?) in the near future. I'm hoping to catch up with him for an interview in Toronto, not only because he's still one of my favorite directors (I loved The Informant) but there's so much I'd love to talk about, considering he last said he can "see the end" of his career coming. Here's another update.

Exclusive: Poster Debut for Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox Poster Debut

Our good friends at Fox Searchlight have sent over the official poster for Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox for us to debut exclusively today. By now I hope everyone knows all about this stop-animation movie based on the beloved Roald Dahl book featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Jason Schwartzman, Michael Gambon, Adrien Brody, Brian Cox, Anjelica Huston, and Wes Anderson himself. I'm digging the offset design and colors on this poster, I really hope it catches everyone's eye at movie theaters around the country, as it's being sent out this weekend. Enjoy!
