Diablo Cody Might Write Ratner's Long Awaited Playboy Movie

Diablo Cody

It's been a few years since a biopic about Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner was announced with Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon) attached to direct. Last year there was even a rumor that Robert Downey Jr. was in very serious negotiations to take on the role of the father of the Playboy bunny. However, other than quick fleeting mentions of speculation it doesn't seem like there's been any real progress made towards going into production. However, Cinematical made a keen observation on Twitter when Hefner updated: "Meeting with Diablo Cody to talk about the Brian Grazer Playboy film today." Oh really, Hef?

Sound Off: Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity - Your Thoughts?

Paranormal Activity

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Normally we only have these kinds of discussions for big blockbusters, but because Paranormal Activity has so much buzz right now, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to stop and talk about it (as it just hit theaters today anyway). Is it comparable to The Blair Witch Project? Is it better than Blair Witch? Is it as scary as everyone is saying? Is it a good movie, a brilliant movie, or just deceptive and dull? Did you want more from it? Did it live up to your expectations? Sound off below, write down your comments, and let us know what you thought of Paranormal Activity!

Zombieland Thoughts Plus A Quick Comparison to The Road

Zombieland

I just saw Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland for my second time down here at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX. It's a great zombie comedy with lots of good comedy and lots of flesh eating zombies. But as I was sitting there watching it, I started to realize that it has a lot of similarities to John Hillcoat's The Road, which I saw a few weeks back at the Telluride Film Festival (read my review). And instead of just reviewing Zombieland normally (as Brandon will be doing that anyway), I thought I'd look at the comparisons between Zombieland and The Road, just for fun. So without further ado, let's get right into it, but beware there will be spoilers!

Fantastic Fest Video Review: Jared Hess' Gentlemen Broncos

Gentlemen Broncos

The big opening night film at Fantastic Fest was Jared Hess' Gentlemen Broncos, his third feature film following Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre previously. In short, I didn't like it much, despite my hope that I would. I'm a very big fan of Napoleon Dynamite, but hated Nacho Libre. Gentlemen Broncos is slightly better than Nacho, but that's not saying much. It has some occasional humor, thanks to the brilliant Jemaine Clement, but I didn't laugh that much otherwise. Peter from SlashFilm and Scott from We Are Movie Geeks shot a short video talking about the film at Fantastic Fest - check out that video review below!

Gorgeous New Batch of Photos from Richard Kelly's The Box

The Box Photos

Our friends over at JoBlo have just dug up a new batch of photos from Richard Kelly's The Box, which hits theaters in November. I wouldn't normally think of this film being photogenic (at least for scenes that don't contain spoilers), but these photos are just gorgeous. I'm still very excited for this, despite knowing plenty about the story and hearing some early reactions that haven't been all that positive, but I just love Richard Kelly. And I think I'm excited because I know there is some kind of sci-fi aspect as well. Either way, I'm still looking forward to this probably more than anything else left this year, so take a look below!

New UK Poster for Gilliam's Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Poster

An official UK quad poster for Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus has arrived online courtesy of Empire. I'm featuring it today not because it's a poster you'll see in your own theater, but rather because it's a fairly well-designed and a wonderfully fantastical poster. It's perfect for Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which I've seen a few times (read my review), just because its got all that Terry Gilliam weirdness put onto it (notice the floating Tom Waits in the background?). There are even floating head versions of Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, who filled in for Heath Ledger after his death.

Latest Venom Draft Turned In, Sony Still Moving Forward

Venom

Way back in July of last year, Sony announced that they were officially moving forward on a Venom spin-off. But like Fox, just because they're "moving forward" doesn't mean it will ever actually happen. We last heard in April that they had worked on a draft but really couldn't talk about it. SciFi Wire now has an update from writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick that, "we've written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they're pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward." Not exactly a huge update, but still an update, in a good way I suppose. But will Sony ever decide to make it? And who will they get to direct?

Paul Dano Joins Cameron Diaz & Tom Cruise's Wichita Project

Paul Dano

Although this is project already shooting (see photos here), casting announcements are still hitting. Variety has announced that Paul Dano has joined the cast of Wichita, an action comedy that stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The story centers on a federal agent, portrayed by Cruise, who finds himself teamed with a wholesome and upbeat Midwestern woman, played by Diaz. Dano will play a charming but mysterious scientist whose invention is at the center of Cruise and Diaz's chase. Fox has apparently given this a huge budget, with plane crashes and epic action set pieces, which is exciting, but who knows if it'll deliver.

New Official Trailer for Denzel Washington's The Book of Eli

The Book of Eli Trailer

Warner Brothers has just debuted a second full-length trailer for The Book of Eli today on Yahoo. We last debuted the teaser trailer for this during Comic-Con back in July. The Book of Eli stars Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Michael Gambon, Ray Stevenson, and Tom Waits. This still looks as awesome as it did a few months ago - I've got high hopes for it, which is odd for a mid-January movie. It's got a lot of action, I love the gritty, western style of it, and I love everything else about this, especially the cast. It should be pretty damn fun and I can't wait to kick of 2010 with a great movie like this. Anyway, check it out below!

ET Premieres Behind-the-Scenes Footage from Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2 ET

I really hate Entertainment Tonight. I'm sorry if I burst anyone's bubble by saying that, but really, they just suck. ET Online has debuted a first look at a "set visit" for Iron Man 2. Don't expect much. Although it's a full five minutes long, this features nothing more than a few bland questions and answers, some behind-the-scenes footage so bad you can't even see what's going on, and maybe a glimpse or two of actual footage from the movie. Sure it looks cool and some of the stunts you see Black Widow doing (for a half of a second) look pretty awesome, but that's about it. I'm excited for Iron Man 2, sure, but let's see some actual footage!

MGM on the Verge of Bankruptcy, Asks for Emergency Funds

MGM

Back in 1924, Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures Corporation and Louis B. Mayer Pictures merged together to form Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, or MGM, with the motto, "Ars Gratia Artis", a Latin phrase meaning "Art for art's sake." Over the last 85 years, the studio has become one of the most powerful and recognized studios ever, probably because of their iconic logo (seen above) and roaring lion at the start of all of their films. Well, bad news, as Nikki Finke reports that the studio is "teetering on bankruptcy." Apparently they made a desperate call on Thursday asking for help rounding up an extra $170 million in emergency funds.

Weinsteins Go Back to Scream, Short Circuit, Scanners & More

Scream

Hollywood is becoming so formulaic that I think it's time FirstShowing created a sort of MadLibs, so you, the readers, can put news stories together yourself.  Sound fun? Of course it does. Today (Variety/The Hollywood Reporter) announced that (Studio/Company) is (remaking/rebooting/revisiting/adapting) the (established Book/Comic Book/Toyline/Film/TV Show) for release next year in (3-D/IMAX/both). We'll even start you off with one. Variety announced that Dimension will be revisiting the Scream franchise, remaking Short Circuit, and revisiting Scanners in 3-D. But stick with me, my story gets better!
