Ron Howard Talks The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft
Though we've known that Ron Howard was going to be at the helm of an adaptation of Image Comics series The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft, we haven't really found out any details regarding his approach to the story about a wimpy writer who becomes a bad-ass fighter of all things supernatural (hence the H.P. Lovecraft aspect). This is a new experience for Ron Howard as he steps up to direct his first comic book adaptation, and Geoff Boucher from the LA Times caught up with Ron Howard recently, where they talked about the challenges of bringing Lovecraft to the big screen and a little bit about the story.

First Look: Promo Art for Nick Frost & Simon Pegg's Paul
This bit of art, on display in the backlot at Universal Studios, first showed up on Twitter a few weeks back. I'm not sure why Universal has decided to put this up on display as part of the backlot studio tour, and not online for everyone to see, but that's Universal for you. Anyway, Collider now has a bigger, cleaner, high res shot of the first promo art for Nick Frost and Simon Pegg's new movie Paul directed by Greg Mottola, that's being shot as we speak. It doesn't show us what the alien looks like but it's a pretty good promo photo and it sets the mood for what's to come. If you don't know what Paul is yet, well, then you're not a rightful geek.

Mamet's Anne Frank Project Ditched for Being 'Too Dark'
Back in August we found out about the unlikely pairing of writer/director David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, Redbelt) and Disney on a remake of The Diary of Anne Frank. But with the recent shake up that's been going down at Disney after Dick Cook exited the studio, it looks like Mamet's take on the story isn't happening anymore. Sharon Waxman over at The Wrap says the picture, "developed by the studio’s chief of production, Oren Aviv... was recently rejected by the studio as 'too dark' and put in turnaround." Sure it's a dark story already, but it sounds like Mamet's take was just too far out there for the new studio execs.

Marvel's Avi Arad Secures Rights for a CGI Popeye Movie
Yesterday we keyed you in on some updates regarding a whole slew of Marvel properties from Ghost Rider to Daredevil. Well within that Variety article was a lot of information thrown around concerning all the reboots of franchises and tying most of them back to Marvel Studios founder and chief creative officer of Marvel Entertainment, Avi Arad. The guy has had his hands in all Marvel productions, but a little tidbit that almost went overlooked regarding a project Arad is working on outside of the Marvel universe: "Arad has also secured rights to make a CGI animated feature based on the venerable strongman Popeye."

Tim League's Fantastic Fest Kicks Off Today Down in Austin!
The third and final festival in my epic 28-day tour is Fantastic Fest that takes place from September 24th to October 1st down in Austin, Texas. This is my second year attending and it's one of my favorite festivals. Why? First off, because it's unlike any other film festival out there. And secondly because it takes place at the world famous Alamo Drafthouse, only the very best movie theater in the entire world (not even joking about that). Every time I come down to Austin, I just love being here and I fall in love with the Drafthouse all over again. Thankfully I get to spend 8 days watching crazy films at the Drafthouse for Fantastic Fest.

Mickey Rourke Will Murder in Cold Blood as The Ice Man
Mickey Rourke had quite the comeback last year with his Academy Award nominated performance in The Wrestler, and the momentum carried him right into the villainous role of Whiplash in next summer's Iron Man 2. Well the hits keep on coming as the NY Post reports that Rourke has been cast as the titular mafia assassin in The Ice Man. Story is based on Phil Carlo's book of the same name which chronicles the life of Richard Kuklinski, a mafia hit man who murdered more than 200 people. But apparently the role almost didn't go to Rourke, and was a bit of contention between Carlo and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

David Cronenberg is Remaking David Cronenberg's The Fly
Yep, you read that right. David Cronenberg is developing a reboot of his own 1986 sci-fi classic The Fly. Cronenberg's film is already a remake of Kurt Neumann's 1958 film of the same name as well. The story centers on an eccentric scientist named Seth Brundle (played by Jeff Goldblum) who, after an experiment with teleportation goes awry, is transformed into a fly. Geena Davis starred as Goldblum's love interest, Veronica. Oddly, Cronenberg has said in the past that he did not want to be involved a remake, but now he's just doing it on his own. I can't wait for someone to talk with him to find out exactly why he's coming back.

Platinum Studios Developing 'Mal Chance' Big Screen Adaptation
Platinum Studios has joined forces with producer Tony Krantz to develop a live-action feature from the Platinum Studios graphic novel Mal Chance, with Scott Murphy to adapt. Krantz, best known for "24" and Mulholland Drive, will produce with Platinum CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. Mal Chance tells the story of Lola, part of an ancient clan of assassins targeted for death by a powerful gangster. Her only recourse is to bring down the gangster's entire operation with the help of an honest FBI agent who is unaware of her true identity. Sounds like a sexy, fun comic book action-thriller, much like Witchblade... Or so that's what I hope!

Sam Raimi Producing Supernatural Yeti Horror Film 'Refuge'
Ghost House Pictures principal and filmmaker Sam Raimi has announced (via THR) that he'll produce a new supernatural horror project called Refuge. The film is based on a pitch by up-and-coming British director Corin Hardy about a remote town terrorized by a Yeti, the mythological creature native to the mountains of the Himalayas. Hardy will direct from a script by fellow British writer Tom de Ville, whose only credits are the TV shows "Urban Gothic" and "Lexx." Hardy and De Ville are also working on a short film with the same premise that is designed to help Hardy refine his vision while the script is being written.

Barbie Has Everything Else, So Why Not a Movie Now, Too?
If you didn't think Transformers, G.I. Joe, Battleship, Candyland, He-Man, Monopoly, and Stretch Armstrong (did I miss any?) weren't enough to wet your clearly desperate appetite for toy based cinema, now it's time to bring some of that action to the ladies. Variety announced earlier tonight that Universal will be bringing Mattel's 50 year-old Barbie toyline to the big screen. I'm pretty sure we already saw this back when it was called Legally Blonde, but apparently Universal thinks that they've bagged a winner amongst the other studios clamoring for a safe bet in picking up well-known intellectual property for new movies.

Marvel Still Working on Ghost Rider 2, Daredevil, & Silver Surfer
An interesting update has hit Variety today regarding Marvel and specifically some of the upcoming comic book projects Fox has in the works - such as Ghost Rider 2. The article primarily mentions that Columbia Pictures has begun moving forward with the Ghost Rider sequel and brought on David Goyer to create the story and supervise writers (even though Goyer said "he hadn't signed on yet"). Goyer last directed The Unborn but is probably better known for writing the Blade trilogy as well as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. The plans are to apparently base the sequel on a Ghost Rider script that Goyer wrote years ago.
