Geoffrey Rush Returning for 'On Stranger Tides' Next Year

Captain Barbossa

We know that Disney is trying to move forward on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides by next year so that it'll be ready to hit theaters in 2011 (I think they're desperate for another big tentpole). As of this moment, we don't know whether or not Johnny Depp will be back (given his complaints about Dick Cook's departure). But one actor that will be returning is Geoffrey Rush, who played Captain Barbossa in the past three films. Rush told MTV that he needs to "keep his schedule open for a possible start to filming next spring." That seems accurate, but who knows if they'll get Rob Marshall on-board to direct that quickly.

Cowboy Bebop is Apparently 'Too Awesome' for Fox to Make

Cowboy Bebop

So we know that Keanu Reeves is still attached to play Spike Spiegel in a live-action Cowboy Bebop movie, whenever it gets made. However, what we don't know is how far along in the process the project is, especially since it doesn't have a director attached. Reeves updated MTV recently and revealed that it hasn't moved forward because Fox is concerned over the budget. Here's what he had to say: "There's a draft of the script, but the writer did such a great job [that] in order to make the movie, you would need half a billion dollars." I just love that quote. Was it really that awesome or did they just throw in as much as they could?

Updated: Philip Seymour Hoffman & Chloe Moretz in Let Me In

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Chloe Moretz

Just accept it - they're remaking Let the Right One In and there's nothing you can do about it. Instead of sitting around complaining, just be happy that it may actually be shaping up to be a pretty good movie (or so I hope). SlashFilm has an interesting scoop regarding casting on the project that comes from the NY Times' movie info page. They list Kodi Smit-McPhee, the kid from The Road, as the boy Owen (instead of Oskar), Chloe Moretz, the girl from 500 Days of Summer and Kick-Ass, in the role of the vampire girl Abby (instead of Eli), and lastly, Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hoffman, really?! Now that is awesome.

Ryan Reynolds Still Deadpool, Liefeld Approves Fox's Plans

Deadpool

There have been a lot of developments related to the comic book movie world recently, from Disney buying Marvel, to even then news that Ryan Reynolds would be playing the Green Lantern (remember that?). In regards to Reynolds, when that casting news hit, most people thought that this meant he would be out as Deadpool in the spin-off Fox is developing (and had already greenlit). But we now have early confirmation from Rob Liefeld, one of the co-creators of Deadpool, that Reynolds is still on-board to play Deadpool. Liefeld spilled the news on his Twitter (via SHH) after a meeting with producer Lauren Shuler Donner.

Andrew Niccol Adapting Stephenie Meyer's Novel 'The Host'

Andrew Niccol - The Host

Now this is a very interesting combination of talents. Gattaca and Lord of War director Andrew Niccol has been hired to write a screenplay and direct an adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's first adult novel titled "The Host", which just hit bookshelves last May (Amazon). Producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz have used their own money to acquire the screen rights. Apparently it was tough getting the rights. "We wanted Stephenie to be involved in the adaptation and have her endorse and be part of the creative decisions," Wechsler told Variety. Twilight has "proven she knows more about what works than most."

Two More Actors Join the Cast of Kenneth Branagh's Thor

Jaimie Alexander and Colm Feore

The last we heard about Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Marvel's Thor was the official casting of the always beautiful and talented Natalie Portman as love interest Jane Foster. Since then, the casting couch has been relatively quiet (as far as we know) until today's announcement from THR adding Colm Feore (seen in Season 7 of "24") and Jaimie Alexander (seen in ABC Family's "Kyle XY") to the cast. They join the already cast Chris Hemsworth (as Thor) and Tom Hiddleston (as the villain Loki), but as with all of Marvel's productions, not even the hammer of Thor can get us anymore than a tidbit of info on these characters.

Titanic in Digital 3-D Will Put the Iceberg Right in Your Face

Titanic

By now you know that digital 3-D is the cool new kid on the block, and he's stealing all of 2-D's friends. But with plenty of future blockbusters getting the three dimensional treatment, what else could possibly happen with the new technology? That's right! They're going to go back and turn all your old favorite films into 3-D adventures and we can all have a piece of it for the price of an admission ticket. Pixar's Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are the first (albeit deserving) of this 3-D re-release trend. But now, as THR reports, the the highest grossing film of all time, James Cameron's Best Picture winning epic Titanic, might not be far behind.

Kurtzman and Orci Developing a Big Screen Xombie Movie

Xombie

Hot off the heels of all the Cowboys and Aliens news, writers and producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have announced yet another comic book adaptation. DreamWorks is in negotiations to buy Xombie, a pitch about a zombie who is also a policeman based on a Devil’s Due comic book written by James Farr. The screenplay was pitched and written by a "cop-turned-scribe" named Will Beall, with Kurtzman and Orci in talks to produce (and not necessarily write). Beall is a former beat cop and anti-gang policeman in the 77th Division who recently became a homicide detective; he continues to serve in the LAPD while writing.

Wilson Brothers Reteaming for a Buddy Comedy About Reporters

Andrew Wilson & Luke Wilson

When everyone goes to see Drew Barrymore's Whip It (which everyone better do) later this year, one of the most memorable appearances will be that of Andrew Wilson, one of the three Wilson brothers who hasn't been in anything since Mike Judge's Idiocracy. MTV caught up with Andrew in Toronto to talk about Whip It but ended up getting an interesting scoop about another new project called Electric Avenue (not to be confused with Eddy Grant's song) that he will direct and his brother Luke Wilson will be starring in. "I'm gonna direct again. Luke and I are going to do something... called Electric Avenue starting [next year]."

Diablo Cody Bringing 'Sweet Valley High' to the Big Screen

Diablo Cody - Sweet Valley High

Even though Diablo Cody's Jennifer's Body only made $7.4 million of the weekend, Universal still believes that she can bring crowds to theaters. The studio is in negotiations to pick up the rights to the long-running book series "Sweet Valley High" and brought on Diablo Cody to adapt. Cody also will produce with Mason Novick (Juno, 500 Days of Summer) as well as Marc Platt. The series, created by Francine Pascal, made its debut in 1983, publishing 150+ books with more than 60 million copies. The last one came out January 2003. To be honest, this is the first time I've even heard of this series, but that's probably just me.

Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson Join The Other Guys

Samuel L. Jackson

If there's one subgenre of films I can't get enough of, it's the buddy cop flick. The insane antics that can be derived from two police officers with conflicting personalities and ideologies always makes for a fun combination. More recently filmmakers have been exploiting the buddy cop genre for comedy (if you haven't seen Edgar Wright's Hot Fuzz, you're missing out). The newest filmmaker taking aim at the buddy cop world is Adam McKay (Anchorman) and his film The Other Guys (formerly The B-Team). Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are in and now Variety reports that Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson have joined.
