Mark Wahlberg to Star in the 'Reykjavik-Rotterdam' Remake
October 5, 2009
by Alex Billington
Mark Wahlberg has signed on to star in Reykjavik-Rotterdam, a remake of an Icelandic thriller that has been set up at Working Title, according to THR tonight. The original film, directed by Óskar Jónasson, was released in 2008. Baltasar Kormakur, who produced and starred in the original, is attached to direct the English-language remake. And Aaron Guzikowski, who wrote the spec script Prisoners, is writing the new remake script. The plot centers on a security guard and former alcohol smuggler on the Iceland-Netherlands route who is tempted back into illicit business by a dubious friend after encountering financial problems.
The original Reykjavik-Rotterdam is Iceland's submission for this year's Foreign Language Oscar race and won five of that country's film awards previously. The English version likely will be relocated to other places rather than Reykjavik, which is the capitol if Iceland, and Rotterdam, a port city on the edge of Holland. Baltasar Kormakur also has another thriller called Jar City that is already being remade over at Overture. At one point Wahlberg was attached to Guzikowski's script Prisoners, but that project recently dropped all of its actors. We'll keep you updated on the status of this Reykjavik-Rotterdam remake as any news comes in.
