National Lampoon is Ready for Yet Another Family Vacation

Why? Because they're the Griswolds! Well, maybe not all of them, but at the very least we'll have one of the Griswold's going on another vacation as THR reports that New Line Cinema is developing a pseudo-sequel to Vacation, the classic 1983 road trip comedy from National Lampoon. But this time Rusty Griswold, son to Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo's Clark and Ellen Griswold from the original film, will embark on a new vacation as the father of his own family. While this isn't the most thrilling news, my hopes are slightly lifted at the mention that David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) will be producing and potentially directing.
Though the concept is already lined up, New Line is only just now looking for writers to pen the script. The reason that this isn't simply being considered a clean reboot of the comedy series is that there is hope to bring back Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, now Grandma and Grandpa Griswold, as a way to pass the torch to Rusty. However no deals have been inked yet to official bring back either of them. New Line's desire is to make a film in the same vein as Planes, Trains & Automobiles or Little Miss Sunshine, but I can't help but think that this just sounds like an unfunny straight-to-DVD sequel like all the other recent garbage that National Lampoon has been throwing out onto shelves. But that's where the good news comes in.
First, National Lampoon is not involved as New Line and Warner Bros. still have control over the characters of Vacation. Second, David Dobkin who crafted one of the best comedies of the last ten years with Wedding Crashers, is certainly a big plus. At this point in the game it's a toss-up if this project can live up to Griswold standards. And if New Line and Dobkin can actually pull this off then we just might be in for something akin to "the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny f**kin' Kaye." Thoughts?

An impoverished screenwriter enters the office of a studio bignob, and is forced to spend the duration of the meeting on his knees. He is forbidden from looking the bignob in the eye (if you’ll forgive the expression).
Screenwriter: “Please sir, I’ve cobbled together a script for a comedy. It’s a bit like those National Lampoon’s Vacation films, only not as good. In fact it’s rubbish.”
Bignob: “Silence, pipsqueak! Leave it to me, we’ll slap the National Lampoon name on it, offer Chevy Chase a one-scene cameo – he’ll take anything these days – and people will flock to see it like idiot sheep attending an idiot sheep convention!”
Screenwriter: “Oh, sir, what a splendid idea! It’ll make a fortune and I can finally buy some shoes!”
Bignob: “Silence, pipsqueak! I’ll be the one trousering the cash, thankyou! Now bugger off back to your one-room bedsit with the bucket-toilet. Your rats must need feeding.”
And with that the screenwriter shuffles backwards on his knees out of the office, keeping his head bowed. As he is ejected onto the street by a burly security guard, a single tear falls from his filthy face onto his bare foot. It’s the only wash he can afford.

I'm with No. 2. I'd love to see Anthony Michael Hall as Rusty. Either way I'm excited. As long as it's not straight to DVD, or of the calibur of a straight to DVD movie. Although a vacation movie without Clark W. Griswold leading the pack just won't feel the same.

Loved the last Vegas Vacation - hilarious! This could definitely work! *Ethan, Wedding Crashers had a couple laughs but most of it was boring and slow. Definitely not one of the best comedies in 10 years. Have to disagree with you there
