Warren Ellis' Comic Series 'Gravel' Being Adapted by Legendary
October 9, 2009
by Alex Billington
Legendary Pictures is developing a feature adaptation of the Warren Ellis comic book property "Gravel," as announced by Heat Vision. Other comic properties from Warren Ellis in development around Hollywood include Red (set to star Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman) and Ocean. The "Gravel" series blends espionage and dark fantasy in tracking the modern-day exploits of British "combat magician" William Gravel. Ellis first introduced the character in a 1999 limited series of graphic novels entitled "Strange Kiss." Ellis will serve as executive producer and write the screenplay. Sounds like a cool story to adapt and a comic I should read.
Gravel is published by Avatar Press. You can check out a preview and find more on the official website. "Every time the weird bastard steps into the daylight, people come out to see what he's up to for some reason," explains Warren Ellis. "It's funny how a character created for a single story, Strange Kiss, has hung around. I'm creating a whole new mythology and Occult Cosmology for Gravel, the series. And also having some fun with The Sigsand Manuscript, the preferred Ancient Occult Text of Thomas Carnacki, the supernatural detective created by William Hope Hodgson." Glad to know that Legendary is adapting this!

Zetsu, I was actually thinking the same thing. Ellis' run on Thunderbolts was epic and a great break from the usual villain fare. It was psychological, thought-provoking, and brutal. And Penance may have the coolest power/costume I've ever seen. GRAVEL is an insane bug-fuck crazy story. It's like Constantine with guns, but definitely worth a read.

Great news, but…
Don't get this, at all. How can this be adapted and not be a STRONG R or even, hehe an 'X' rating? I will ofc welcome this, but if I could choose what of Ellis' work I'd like to see it would have to be
1) Transmetropolitan
2) The Authority
