Indie Trailer Sunday: Antonio Campos' Intense 'Afterschool'

Today's indie trailer is for a film by New York filmmaker Antonio Campos. It's called Afterschool and premiered at Cannes in 2008. You may recognize Michael Stuhlbarg as the headmaster because he stars in the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man. This is about an internet-addicted prep-school student who captures the drug overdose of two girls on video. That doesn't sound that intriguing, but this trailer is pretty intense, and by the end of it I was sold. I really want to see this, I'm amazed it's slipped through the cracks until now. You may think you know what's coming, but it seems like it has some big twists. Check out the trailer below!

Robert, a student at an elite preparatory school, accidentally captures on camera the horrible death of two girls and is tasked with memorializing their lives in a film meant to speed up the school's healing process.
Afterschool is both written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Antonio Campos, of only a few shorts films including Buy It Now and The Last 15. This first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year and went on to play at other festivals including New York and Berlin. IFC Films acquired US distribution rights in September. Afterschool has already been playing in limited theaters and on VOD since October 2nd.

I saw this at the Wisconsin Film Fest this year. I went based on the trailer. It is a really slow movie with shots that just sit and linger for far too long.

@12 you described the pitfall many directors fall into. Lingering on shots too long which in turn slows down the pace of the film. This seems to mostly happen when they both direct and edit the film themselves. I've seen this over and over. They are just too close to it for a proper perspective. I worked on a film a couple years ago that was shot beautifully, well acted and a decent plot. But in the finished film the pacing was so bad it ruined the entire experience. I remember watching the "Garden State" extras and Director Zach Braff talked about how important is was to have a really skilled Editor work on his film. In the pivotal scene towards the end between Andrew and Sam, the scene was originally much longer. And for some reason, just wasn't working. Editor Myron Kerstein shortened and tightened up the scene by changing the order of the dialog to highlight the strongest points and move the story forward. What we are left with is a scene that is quite tender and magical. And yet completely different from the way it was originally written and shot.

I enjoyed that kid who plays the lead in his role as Tucker on Royal Pains. His storylines and the way he interacted with the rest of the cast was always the most entertaining in the show.
