As of late, Twitter is the place to be when it comes to cool announcements and fun tidbits in cinema. Today was no exception as Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich used his Twitter to make a video announcement about some news regarding the Toy Story series. First, because of the stellar performance of the 3-D re-release of the first two Toy Story films (watch the trailer), the limited two week engagement has been extended through the end of October. And second, comedians Kristen Schaal (of HBO's "Flight of the Conchords") and Blake Clark (Bedtime Stories, 50 First Dates) are joining the voice cast of Toy Story 3.
Though Unkrich wasn't forthcoming about what character Kristen Schaal would be voicing, he did let us know that Blake Clark has replaced the late Jim Varney as the voice talent behind Woody's good friend Slinky (seen above courtesy of AICN). These two join the already impressive and growing cast which includes [*big breath*] Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Estelle Harris, John Morris, Laurie Metcalf, R. Lee Ermey, Jodi Benson, Ned Beatty, Michael Keaton, Timothy Dalton, Jeff Garlin, Bonnie Hunt and Whoopi Goldberg. Whew!
After checking out the 3-D double feature in theaters, and seeing the theatrical trailer for the forthcoming third installment, I can't wait to return to theaters to hang out with Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang. Even the character posters (which are the sleekest and most beautiful still images of computer animation I've ever seen) make me feel like a kid again. And if you haven't hit the theaters to experience the 3-D Toy Story double feature, you better check it out before it's gone! Though you can thank Disney for keeping it in theaters until the end of October, otherwise it would've already stopped playing by the end of this weekend.

Does anyone know why we in the UK only got to see Toy Story? Will Toy Story 2 be coming out later? I suspect they are staggering it due to the release of UP but my son is driving me nuts asking when he can see Toy Story 2 on the 'big tv' with the special glasses.

Blake Clark does sound an awful lot like Jim Varney so I think it is now safe yto say we've got a great slinky replacement!
