Must Watch: Awesome Promo Trailer for The Expendables!
October 13, 2009
Source: ComingSoon
by Alex Billington
I've been waiting and waiting for a trailer for Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables! This isn't the official trailer, I'm sure Lionsgate won't be too happy, but damnit, it's so awesome I can't help myself! ComingSoon has posted the first promo trailer (made to sell the movie to distributors) for The Expendables, which will hit theaters next August. This badass movie stars Sly Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Brittany Murphy, Danny Trejo, Charisma Carpenter, and so many others. I don't think I need to say anything else - just fire this bad boy up & enjoy!
Watch the first promo trailer for Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables:
Trailer removed at the request of Lionsgate. Sorry guys!
We expect this trailer to be pulled down by Lionsgate very soon, so check it out now while you still can!
The story follows a team of mercenaries who head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator.
The Expendables is both written and directed by legendary action actor and filmmaker Sylvester Stallone, who has also directed Paradise Alley, Rocky 2, 3, and 4, as well as the most recent Rambo movie. This is a Nu Image / Millennium Films production produced by Avi Lerner and Les Weldon. Lionsgate is bringing The Expendables to theaters starting on August 20th, 2010 late next year. Glad to see its very hard R!

I'm definitely excited about seeing The Expendables, but I'm not sure I was impressed with the footage in this promo. Some of the dialogue seems a bit wooden, and Jet Li's character was out of place in most of his scenes. Anyway I'm sure it's still going to be a kick ass movie.

What a lot of people have to take into consideration is:
When a film is finished (in terms of editing), it gets a color-correction edit-job. That really makes a film look more "professional", thorough, and consistant.
Second, we're getting a lot of lines out of context (as you would in an official trailer). But this is being used to sell the movie to distros. Im fairly certain that when the official trailer comes out, there will be less words, and less words out of context, and more action.
And lastly, the sound design isn't fully there. Along with the proper edits, and everything that goes with that.
And really, ALL of those things together can either make or break a trailer. And personally, I think they're going to do it right for the official trailer. Im not only defending this trailer because I am super fucking jacked to see it (I saw Rambo 9 times [and yes, paid for] in theatres). But I also know that Stallone hit rock bottom in the late 90's and early 00's, so I know that he knows he has no margin for error (Rocky Balboa being his disguised auto-biography).

It looks like a straight to DVD action flick. And with Eric Roberts in it I'm sure we'll be seeing this on HBO at around 2 or 3 in the morning when I'm getting home from Roscoe's like the rest of his movies.
clippers350 on Oct 13, 2009
37
As odd as this is to say….I could do without Stallone in this movie. I'm cool with it being an 80's revival action flick, but there's a reason movies that were big in the 80's won't survive in today's theaters. The audience has changed, and aside from people who loved cheesy 80's action flicks….no one is going to see this.
The bar has been raised as far as action scenes are concerned. Think about it. When was the last time you saw an action flick that didn't have the most acrobatic and off the wall fight scene's? Old 80's movies had basic stand up fighting with a little spin kick here and there.
Which brings me to why I'm pumped to see this movie. I'm excited to see the styles mixed. With Jason Statham in this film…I'm there, but throw in Jet Li as well. Those are probably today's main action stars (at least the good ones….Vin Diesel counts too I suppose) and if you blend their style of action with Stallone and Dolph's old school style and you might find some magic. Kind of like a an ensemble buddy cop movie with a young cop and an old cop. Old guys and their style, vs the young guns and their style. It could be pretty exciting….but ultimately I'm only expecting to see pointless violence at it's best.

I'm going to hold off seeing this trailer.
It's a promo put together for distributors as opposed to normal audiences so I can't be sure how polished it will look, how much it will give away or how representative it will be of the final product.
This case having been highlighted with the early trailers they used for Rambo. Anyone remember the horrible A team military type or the even worse
"you know his name, you know what he's capable of…" talk over finishing with the snake leaping at the screen. Awful.
Sly can count on my attendance when the film comes out so I don't need to sully the experience with this.

So is this operating in the "so bad it's good" universe? Is this a tongue-in-cheek action film? On a production level it looks cheesy and kinda cheap, not helping if the movie wants to be taken seriously. Or is this just an out-and-out no apologies B-film?

Just so you all are aware, these things are made prior to any sort of final edit. There are no effects beyond just the practical stuff and MAYBE some cheap stand-in CG stuff, the sound is probably from the boom mic and not mixed, the music hasn't been written yet…
It's not a good way to judge the quality of a movie. There's been practically no post work done on this yet. It was probably cut while they were still shooting the thing, since they seemed to be just intercutting the same three or four scenes with each other.
So yeah, this flick still looks great to me. The only thing that turns me off is the berets they wear, but I'm sure I'll be able to get over that (and it looks like it's not through the whole flick, so that's good).
@Script Shadow:
Jet Li said he didn't want to make any more martial arts movies and start taking some more serious roles.
I'm more concerned about Donnie Yen, who has stated that he's going to stop making films altogether. That pisses me off because not only is he a great martial artist, he's a really great actor. I'm hoping that he really said he was going to stop doing martial arts films and that I just got a bad translation of that or something, cause he's not that old and can act with the best of them.
