Bong Joon-ho Updates His Next Sci-Fi Project Snow Piercer

He may not be known well in the US yet, but Korean director Bong Joon-ho is one of my favorite non-US directors (he directed Memories of Murder, The Host, and Mother most recently). Back in March, we wrote about a new sci-fi project Bong has in the works based on a French graphic novel called Transperceneige. Joon-ho is still planning to adapt Transperceneige following the release of his newest film Mother (which I saw in Cannes) and has even retitled it to Snow Piercer probably because it's a simpler international title. Our friends at Collider talked with Joon-ho in September and got another update from him on the project.
Joon-ho describes Snow Piercer as a post-apocalyptic movie about a few survivors who end up on a train together (where it's going, I don't know?). It's set after the "apocalypse" has already occured and the whole world is covered by ice and snow, "some kind of new ice age." The train includes many survivors from all over the world and is divided by economic classes, so people are fighting each other over that class struggle. It will be a bit different from the graphic novel that it's based on (not a direct adaptation) but is still about examining the human condition. Joon-ho is planning to shoot Snow Piercer in 2011 if it all works out.
I've been very excited for this ever since I first heard about it back in March. Not only am I just excited to see one of my favorite non-US directors finally work in my very favorite genre, but the concept for this is pretty damn cool. And if there's anyone that can explore the human condition in incredible ways, it's Bong Joon-ho, which you'll already know if you've seen any of his films (since they usually address that). Joon-ho actually wanted to make this in 2005 but went on to The Host instead. And I'm glad he's still pushing forward with a hope to start shooting in 2011 (sooner the better). I'm already anxious for more updates!

Bong is his last name. It's kind of tough for non-Koreans to tell the first names and surnames of famous Koreans apart, since some people anglicize their name into first name+last name, while others keep it the traditional last name+ first name format.
I wasn't going to say anything, but it just didn't look right using his first name in an article.
