Chris Pine Might Be the Next Jack Ryan for Franchise Reboot

After Chris Pine's breakthrough performance in this summer's Star Trek, the young actor has become quite the hot commodity. It looks like Paramount is the studio who will be keeping Pine busy as he's already locked in for Tony Scott's runaway train action-thriller Unstoppable (which is actually at Fox) and was also just added to D.J. Caruso's next project The Art of Making Money, a new Paramount project. Now we can add one more to the list as Variety reports that Pine is in serious negotiations to step into the role of CIA analyst Jack Ryan, in a reboot of the franchise based on Tom Clancy's series of political-thriller novels.
While talks have only recently begun, Paramount expects Pine to officially join the project as it comes to fruition. "The studio and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld are working with a script draft by Hossein Amini, based on an original concept." So it doesn't sound like there's any specific Tom Clancy novel at the heart of the story unlike other Jack Ryan adaptations like The Sum of All Fears or Clear and Present Danger. It also doesn't sound like the project will be getting off the ground anytime soon since it apparently hasn't been decided if Pine will be stepping back onto the USS Enterprise for a Star Trek sequel before becoming Jack Ryan.
I'd imagine Paramount has a more solid investment in getting a Trek sequel off the ground first, but there isn't even a solid start date for that sequel yet, so anything could happen. Chris Pine certainly has some big shoes to fill though since he's the fourth actor to step into Jack Ryan's shoes after Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger) and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears). But the guy's got a lot of talent and charisma, and I think he'll take on the task just fine. Either way, I'm sure he's got plenty of opportunities. im not saying hes the next harrison ford, but if they show jack ryan in a new light pine could be a good cast.

I like Ben Affleck's work, for the most part, but I thought "Sum of all Fears" was pretty lame in comparison to the other Jack Ryan films.
Being that Jack Ryan was / is not a gadget - wielding type of spy / CIA operative, doing a reboot now and using the dated novels as a platform for the scripts doesn't make sense to me. I like the current reboot of Bond, but that's because we are expecting to see high quality action, with the use of the latest hardware and updated technology. Jack Ryan is not the same breed of Character as Bond, and although there is action in the Jack Ryan films, you don't expect to see Jack Ryan pulling off the same gusty moves as James Bond.
Jack Ryan is an "everyman's" type of hero. He's not an action star type character. Unless the new films plan to be prequels, that go back to Ryan's CIA days and reflect that period of actual history, I doubt I'll be as interested in the reboot.

Could be good. I just hope they stick close to the novels. Alec Baldwin was my favourite Jack Ryan. The movies were good, but the books are awesome.

They need to scrap the original story idea for a Jack Ryan reboot, and get Liev Schrieber back for a No Remorse movie.

Talks of adapting the Rainbow Six novel has been buzzing around the industry for years. Last I checked John Woo had something to do with it. Some characters from the story already appeared in some of the Jack Ryan movies.

Since Rainbow Six was a novel long before it was a video game, they would have some kind of plot to work with. The novel used real life characters like the terrorist "the jackal" from the 1970s. Im sure in today's time we could find some terrorist to replace in that plot. They need to quit messing around and make a serious and interesting movie. They don't need John Woo because Rainbow Six and any other Tom Clancy adaptation require an amount of talent and realism. They dont need to make it like G.I.Joe, this isnt a kids movie, and they dont need to make it like it's a video game. Im thinking of a mix between "the kingdom, body of lies, and the bourne series". Covert operatives that sometimes dress in a suit to blend in at political affairs or sometimes in full tactical assaulting a building of terrorists.
