Brian Lynch's Nightcrawlers Script Returns as Monster Squad
October 18, 2009
by Alex Billington
Way back in 2000, screenwriter / comic writer Brian Lynch (on Twitter as @BrianLynch) sold a spec script for a supernatural action comedy called Nightcrawlers to Warner Brothers. McG eventually got attached to direct, but the project never went anywhere. Now THR announces that Nightcrawlers is back under a new title - Monster Squad. Sadly, the project has nothing to do with the original 1987 classic horror film The Monster Squad directed by Fred Dekker, they're just borrowing the title, since it's about a neurotic father who must turn to a childhood tormentor to face his fear of the dark and the monsters who haunt him.
Over the years, Warner Bros has had other writers including Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3) and Audrey Wells (Under the Tuscan Sun, The Game Plan) take a crack at the script in order to "find a balance of laughs and chills." I'm guessing they found the perfect balance. Instead of McG, though, they've brought on director Mike Mitchell (Deuce Bigalow, Surviving Christmas, Sky High) to helm the project. Not the best choice for a director (I would've taken McG), but I guess it's good that this is finally moving forward after so many years. I'm not expecting anything as good as the original Monster Squad, but I expect a campy, fun, horror movie at the very least. Does anyone gets kicked in the nards in this one?

Um, I think you meant gladly. Monster Squad is perfect just as it is, and this sounds like an origional horror title, which are rare nowadays.

I dont think they should use the name "Monster squade" unless its a remake. It would be like me making a film set in another galaxy and naming it Star wars. I'm sure they could have thought up a differnt name
