Lee Daniels Wants to Bring Miss Saigon to the Big Screen Soon

Lee Daniels is another name that most of you probably don't know yet, although we're hoping to change that by February next year. If you've seen the trailers or heard about the film Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, that's the film that Lee Daniels most recently directed. I have a good feeling that if everything stays the same, not only will we see Precious getting a Best Picture nomination, but I expect Lee Daniels will be nominated as well. Anyway, our friends at ComingSoon asked Daniels what he's planning to do next and he revealed that he's interested in bringing the stage musical Miss Saigon to the big screen.
ComingSoon didn't publish any exact quotes from Daniels, but they say "if it happens," he's got "thoughts about directing a movie based on the hit musical Miss Saigon." The show first hit the West End in London back in 1989. The musical is a retelling of Giacomo Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly about an American GI who falls in love with a Vietnamese bar girl during the Vietnam War in the 1970s and then abandons her. It was a popular show (moving to Broadway in the 90's where it ran for ten years) and musical adaptations have been successful in Hollywood, so it makes sense and could probably be pulled off to much success.
Daniels also mentions that his very next project will instead probably be a film called Selma, referring to a location in Alabama where "segregation in the South was at its worst, leading to a march that ended in violence, forcing a famous statement by President Lyndon B. Johnson that ultimately led to the signing of the Civil Rights Act" in 1957 (Wikipedia). That also sounds like a great story that I'd love to see Daniel bring to the big screen because I know he'll do a great job. After proving that he actually is a great director with Precious, I'm already looking forward to whatever he does next, even if it's another adaptation of a musical.
