Ridley Scott and Angelina Jolie May Be Making 'Gucci' Next
October 21, 2009
by Ethan Anderton
Every day the trades announce new projects to be tacked on to ever-growing project lists for already busy actors, writers, directors and producers. Case in point, director Ridley Scott has an already intimidating roster that includes 14 projects currently in development, 8 producing credits, at least 2 upcoming directing jobs and his most recent film, a new take on the classic Robin Hood tale, in post-production. Both Variety and EW report that Scott is return to another project called Gucci, a drama "about murder and decadence in the Gucci fashion dynasty" with Angelina Jolie being the most likely candidate for a femme fatale role.
Variety provides a bit more historical background on this fascinating and treacherous tale of murder:
"[The story] recaptures the glamorous days of the Gucci family dynasty in the 1970s and '80s, when the family was selling $500 million in product annually. Squabbles hobbled the clan until Maurizio, the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci, came out on top of a power struggle to run the family business. Just when he was about to reestablish the brand name by debuting a line designed by newcomer — and now film director — Tom Ford, Maurizio was gunned down in front of his Milan apartment in 1995."
Jolie is in talks with Scott to play Patrizia Reggiano, who was sentenced to 29 years in jail for plotting said murder of her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci. Though the project is a priority for Fox 2000, there are still many puzzle pieces that need to be locked into place. Scott has approached Leonardo DiCaprio, whom he worked with on the political-war thriller Body of Lies, to play Maurizio Gucci, but the actors is not officially attached. However, Scott is looking to start production early next year, well before Jolie's other recently announced acting commitment in The Tourist, most likely making this his big follow-up to Robin Hood.
While the story for this doesn't sound terrible, it doesn't exactly jump out to me as a story that needs to be told cinematically. I'd rather see some faster moves made on the previously announced Alien prequel that Scott is supposed to direct. I mean, when I'm faced with the prospect of a murder in the fashion industry or more acid-bleeding, life-ending Alien action, guess which one I'll take. But maybe that's just me, and maybe Scott wants to diversify his filmography before getting back to his cinematic roots of sci-fi. We'll keep you updated on any developments and let you know if Ridley Scott does decide to direct this as his next project.
