Wes Craven Getting Much Closer to Directing Scream 4 in 3D?

We haven't heard too much big news recently on the Scream 4 front, most likely because writer Kevin Williamson is finishing the script, and the studio is still trying to figure things out before moving forward. However, Bloody-Disgusting has posted a very interesting update today, saying that they've heard that The Weinstein Company is looking to make Scream 4 in 3D. Of course. It sounds like the studio's saving grace is 3D. Additionally, they say "Wes Craven is closer than ever to returning to the director's chair." There was also a rumor earlier this week that he was 100% signed on, but I'm waiting to hear that from TWC first.
Maybe it's just because I still hate 3D (at least until Avatar comes out), but I just have to ask, why is this necessary? I don't understand why The Weinstein Company thinks they have to go the 3D route if they're going to be successful with a sequel? It's similar to how the Saw series is going 3D for Saw VII. It's like they're not at all confident that the sequel will perform on its own, and then they look at box office returns of trash like The Final Destination in 3D, and make a stupid decision to go all gimmicky and shoot this in 3D. One day this is going to backfire on the studios and I'm just waiting for that day. Are you excited?

I hate this idea. The Scream Trilogy brought Horror back into the main stream in the 90's. It deserve so much more then a gimicky 3D.

Whoa whoa whoa, hang on a minute. Saw VII, the next Saw installment, is going to be in 3D?
Why? What possible reason would make them say:
Weinstein Company Head dude: " What do you wanna do today?."
Weinstein Company executive: " I know, let's put horror movies in 3D!"
Weinstein Company Head dude: "Yea!"
Weinstein Company Head dude: "Sausagefest!!"
Why would God let them do this?

I read "Wes Craven Getting Much Closer to Directing Scream 4" I smiled a little bit thinking of the good times that was scream, then I read "in 3-D" my smile dissipated.
Now I'm gonna say this a slasher film in 3D is fail, just look at My Bloody Valentine.

I think 3D is just a gimmick, like in the artical they will be a white Elephant one day when they move the franchise like SAW and SCREAM film on to 3D.
