Indie Trailer Sunday: Hal Holbrook in That Evening Sun Trailer

Earlier this week I was introduced to a small genre of film that I didn't know existed - Southern Gothic. If you're unsure of what exactly that means, like I was at first, just check out this trailer and you'll completely understand. Russ from SlashFilm recently pointed out this trailer for That Evening Sun that stars Hal Holbrook, Ray McKinnon, and Mia Wasikowska (who plays Alice in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland). It looks like Hal Holbrook can still deliver an oustanding performance. I was moved by his work in Into the Wild and it looks like this will be great thanks to him as well. Anyway, I've said enough, just watch this.

An aging Tennessee farmer named Abner Meecham (Hal Holbrook) returns to his homestead and must confront a family betrayal, the reappearance of an old enemy, and the potential loss of his beloved farm.
That Evening Sun is both written and directed by first-time Georgia-born filmmaker Scott Teems, of a few short films including A Death in the Woods previously. This film is based on William Gay's short story "I Hate to See That Evening Sun Go Down". Freestyle Releasing is bringing That Evening Sun to very limited theaters starting on November 13th this fall before expanding throughout November. Look for it locally!

Woah. Off the top of my head (someone correct me), I can't think of another movie quite like this, so it looks original and fascinating. I'll be happy to see a depiction of the South (where I live) that isn't predicated on banjos and buttrape.
Over and over, I've seen the plight of the renting family in this trailer - when the woman says, "We finally have a chance at a new life," or something like that, I was deeply reminded of people I've seen in similar situations. Unfortunately, as with this antagonist, their problems are usually caused by the drunken half-maniac patriarch of the family. Maybe this movie will open people's eyes.

This looks absolutely fantastic, I can't believe it's slipped past me this long. Great song in the trailer, too from Drive By Truckers, a band often referred to with similar adjectives, Southern Gothic Rock, etc… Can't wait to see this. I hope one of the little theaters in my part of the south actually plays it.

WOW! This kinda came out of nowhere. I could see this going the way of 'Gran Torino' except a little less badass. Meaning a possible Oscar buzz and box office success.

It looks like a really good movie. I hope this is one I can reccomend to someone else to see like Gone Baby Gone. Sadly it seems those are far and few between. I was surprised to see Hal Holbrook. I thought he died. It must've been someone else. Ooops.

OMG! Your'e right! #19 All this time I thought the lady from Designing Women was in mourning. Now I've gone and jinxed Hal. My brain sometimes will mix up 2 actors or actresses and for the rest of my life I'm confusing them with each other. Sorry ’bout that Hal.

Hal Holbrook used to do a one-man show (heck, he still might) as Mark Twain. I'm sure you can find it on the internets somewhere. Please do. I remember seeing it in grade school. And I'm 54!
