Tom Cruise Potentially Reteaming with John Woo for Flying Tigers

John Woo's new World War II film Flying Tigers has been in the works for some time now. The fighter squadron story emerged last December when it was part of a trio of projects that Tom Cruise was circling. Since then John Woo announced that he was making the Christopher McQuarrie and Mason Alley scripted picture his next project, but there's been no further updates. Now that all changes in a packed story from Variety about New Regency's upcoming projects, we almost missed the brief mention that Tom Cruise is attached to Flying Tigers, marking his grand return to the cockpit for the first time since 1986's Top Gun.
ComingSoon also caught up with Woo recently and here's what he had to say about Flying Tigers:
"It's based on a true story in WWII, about a group of American volunteer fighter pilots who worked with the Chinese Air Force fighting with the Japanese and they won the war. Also, it's the story of Clair Chennault, and they did a great contribution for the Chinese, and the Chinese people love and respect them. The whole story is about a friendship between a Chinese and an American and [how] they worked together."
That seems like it might have been a rough translation, but we still get the idea. Aside from being a reunion for Cruise and Woo, writer Christopher McQuarrie also worked with Cruise on last year's Valkyrie, which turned out well. I've always been a fan of high flying battles, and though there have been attempts to bring back some aviation combat action, movies like Flyboys and the futuristic Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow just haven't been up to par. But if this combination of talent actually comes together, I think we're in store for quite an adrenaline rush. As long as Cruise decides to take this on next following Wichita.

What is good is that this movie could be a massive hit in China as well. I think Chinese audiences will be thrilled at seeing a movie directed by a popular Chinese Director, with an A-List Hollywood actor, exploring themes of cooperation and friendship between China and America.
I think this movie is coming at a good time.

I'm in! Hollywood doesn't do enough movies about the battles in the Pacific during WWII. It's always Nazi this and Jew that… ZzZzZz… which is also why many Americans fail to realize the atrocities the Japanese also committed during the war. No, they haven't always been the video game, cute gadget makers, anime country that most know now. If people really knew history, they might be shocked at some of the shit that happened over in Asia and the Pacific.

number 2: windtalkers was good?! what movie did you watch? was that the one where nic cage tried to act his way out of a paper bag with a thompson sub-machine gun? not his best work…. but cruise has a little more street cred in the acting department. If maverick flies again, I'll be there. as long as he doesn't bang kelly mcgillis to take my breath away again.
