DreamWorks Orchestrating Biopic on Composer George Gershwin
October 29, 2009
by Ethan Anderton
There are so many interesting stories of real people in the world, that the biopic is one genre I'm always interested in keeping a close eye on. Not everyone's story is the same (even if there are certain formulaic elements to the genre) and there's so much that I don't know about so many differently people. It looks like we'll be learning more courtesy of DreamWorks as Variety reports they've picked up a screenplay written by Doug Wright (Memoirs of a Geisha) about legendary composer George Gershwin responsible for such classic and easily recognizable pieces as "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris". Read on!
The studio has been quiet about the project because they're still finalizing the deal to develop this film in the same vein as another major biopic of theirs: the Martin Luther King, Jr. biopic (led by Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider) with the full blessing of King's family and estate. Story will span Gershwin's life, from his humble beginnings in Brooklyn as the child of Russian immigrants to his early death in Hollywood in 1937 at age 38. No director or cast has been attached just yet, but with such a high profile biopic, I'm sure we can expect some great talent to end up behind this one. As soon as we know more about it, we'll let you know.

George Gershwin was a truly amazing pianist besides just being a world renowned composer. His life was cut tragically short and he was so full of genius…I'm sure if they get the right talent involved, this will be a great film.
