Tropic Thunder's Etan Cohen Writing Men in Black 3 for Sony
October 29, 2009
by Alex Billington
This is also official confirmation that Sony is moving forward on making Men in Black 3, eyeing a start date in 2010 that "could go as soon as the spring." THR's Risky Biz Blog reports that Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen has been hired to write the script. Word is that Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the first two, might be back. Thought they're unsure whether Will Smith will return or not, even though the buzz is that he's apparently interested and doesn't have another "go" movie lined up anyway. I'd hope they don't decide to make this without him, as it just wouldn't be the same. Tommy Lee Jones' involvement is also uncertain.
Ed Solomon wrote the script for the first Men in Black, which hit in 1997, and Robert Gordon and Barry Fanaro wrote the second, which hit in 2002. Combined, those two earned around $1.1 billion worldwide. Apparently Etan Cohen is "deep into his draft," which THR is saying implies that the studio still wants to "continue the franchise's top-tier status." Why wouldn't they? Anyway, I loved the first one, didn't really like the second one much, but will say I am looking forward to a third one. As long as the story is better, funnier, and still holds true to the concept of the original movie (and comic book that it's based on), I'm all for it.

No other "go" movie lined up? what about the I Am Legend prequel and the Hancock sequel? those are as far along as this project is right now

agreed with #5, there is just no point to making these movies without both smith and jones starring. its like making rocky without sly.

and why the hell not do a MIB with new actors??? using the same crew over and over gets really stale….bring in some new blood and have another story line besidees the same old shit of "planet earth will die in 60 minutes if you dont blah blah blah…." there is so much potential for stories here and apparently no one has talent enough to make use of it…

Didn't they already make a third one? OH that's right it was the second one that made me want to jam razor blades under my fingernails, and made me believe it was the third movie (becuase we all know, with rare exceptions, that anything that goes to the third movie or more sucks ass ie; GodfatherIII, First BloodIII & Rambo, Matrix Revolutions, Rocky 3 & 5 I like 4, Oceans 13… point made?).
