Chris Pine Might Be the Next Jack Ryan for Franchise Reboot

Chris Pine

After Chris Pine's breakthrough performance in this summer's Star Trek, the young actor has become quite the hot commodity. It looks like Paramount is the studio who will be keeping Pine busy as he's already locked in for Tony Scott's runaway train action-thriller Unstoppable (which is actually at Fox) and was also just added to D.J. Caruso's next project The Art of Making Money, a new Paramount project. Now we can add one more to the list as Variety reports that Pine is in serious negotiations to step into the role of CIA analyst Jack Ryan, in a reboot of the franchise based on Tom Clancy's series of political-thriller novels.

Bong Joon-ho Updates His Next Sci-Fi Project Snow Piercer

Bong Joon-ho - Transperceneige

He may not be known well in the US yet, but Korean director Bong Joon-ho is one of my favorite non-US directors (he directed Memories of Murder, The Host, and Mother most recently). Back in March, we wrote about a new sci-fi project Bong has in the works based on a French graphic novel called Transperceneige. Joon-ho is still planning to adapt Transperceneige following the release of his newest film Mother (which I saw in Cannes) and has even retitled it to Snow Piercer probably because it's a simpler international title. Our friends at Collider talked with Joon-ho in September and got another update from him on the project.

Justin Long Joins Robert Redford's Lincoln Film The Conspirator

Justin Long

Hi, I'm a Mac and THR reports I'm joining the cast of Robert Redford's upcoming historical drama The Conspirator. That's right folks, the mouthpiece for Apple computers and comedic actor Justin Long is stepping back from the jokes to take on a more dramatic role. Robin Wright Penn is already set to play the title character Mary Surratt, alleged conspirator of Abraham Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth, while James McAvoy will play Frederick Aiken, a young war hero who reluctantly comes to defend Surratt. Long takes on the role of a soldier who lost a limb in the Civil War and is Aiken's best friend and conscience.

Universal Grabs Rashida Jones' Comic Book Frenemy of the State

Rashida Jones - Frenemy of the State

As countless graphic novels and comic books are being translated to film, one can't help but notice that there isn't much of a female presence in the pages or on the screen of these adaptations. Most of the stories are written and feature predominantly masculine themes and characters. This may be attributed to the fact that female-driven films like Aeon Flux, Catwoman and Elektra haven't been the strongest performers with critics and box office alike. But Variety reports that both the female written and driven graphic novel series Frenemy of the State from actress Rashida Jones (I Love You, Man) is headed to the big screen.

Bold Films Next Big Mission Will Be Action-Thriller Psy-Ops

Psy-Ops

As many of people have already noticed, adaptations of previously established intellectual properties are dominating cinema. So when there's an idea that comes along that isn't based on a pre-existing property, there's already a part of me that has a predilection towards liking it, simply because the idea is fresh. Such is the case here as THR reports that Bold Films (Legion) has announced a project called Psy-Ops, an action thriller from visual effects artist and first-time director Stuart Maschwitz about a covert U.S. military unit of psychological operatives who specialize in exploiting their target's deepest fears. So far so good, right?

Tommy Lee Jones to Direct and Co-Star in The Lincoln Lawyer

Tommy Lee Jones

Tommy Lee Jones has had a pretty fruitful acting career, but more recently he has taken a turn towards work behind the camera. In 2005 he made his feature directorial debut with the western crime-drama The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. While I haven't gotten the chance to see it yet, a 7.6 IMDB rating and an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes makes it look like it was a solid debut in the director's chair. Now THR reports that Jones has just set up his next feature directing project with The Lincoln Lawyer, a legal thriller announced back in March which will also have Tommy Lee Jones co-starring with Matthew McConaughey.

The Expendables Promo Trailer

I've been waiting and waiting for a trailer for Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables! This isn't the official trailer, I'm sure Lionsgate won't be too happy, but damnit, it's so awesome I can't help myself! ComingSoon has posted the first promo trailer (made to sell the movie to distributors) for The Expendables, which will hit theaters next August. This badass movie stars Sly Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Brittany Murphy, Danny Trejo, Charisma Carpenter, and so many others. Check This Out: Impressive Futuristic Poster for Daybreakers

Daybreakers

A great new poster for the Spierig Brothers' Daybreakers vampire movie starring Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe has debuted on MTV today. After a quick glance, this poster doesn't seem all that interesting. But once you take a closer look and admire the details and the sleek design and just the futuristic look at all, it's quite a beautiful poster (or at least I think so). A few of my friends saw this at the Toronto Film Festival and actually thought it was great, surpassing all of their expectations, which makes me even more excited to eventually see it. I've got very high hopes for this new vampire flick and expect it to deliver on all accounts!

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer Hosting an 'Open House'

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer have made waves on HBO's hit vampire series "True Blood".  Their on-screen relationship as an inter-species vampire/human couple then became a case of life imitating art (without all the vampire stuff) as the two are now engaged to be married in real life. But it looks like these two just can't stand to be away from each other on or off the screen as Dread Central reports that they have both been cast in Andrew Paquin's upcoming thriller Open House, the story of a couple who discover that days after an open house one potential buyer of their luxurious home never left. And no, it's not a vampire.

Sir Ian McKellen Gives an Update on The Hobbit & Magneto

Ian McKellen as Gandalf

It's always great to hear updates from Sir Ian McKellen on anything and everything. Empire just caught up with him at the San Sebastian Film Festival recently and asked him about two big projects: The Hobbit and X-Men Origins: Magneto. Before we get on to Hobbit, where he had more to say, McKellen said this about Magneto: “There's meant to be a Magneto script floating around, but I've not read it, so I suspect it wouldn't involve me." McKellen also joked that "they can't have someone whose face is as lined as mine any longer" since it'll focus on a young Magneto, as we already know. Let's move on to his other big project!

Worth Watching: Trailer for Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Uncertainty

Uncertainty Trailer

I hadn't heard of this film before today, but it actually looks pretty good. Uncertainty is co-directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (from 500 Days of Summer), Lynn Collins (from Wolverine), and Olivia Thirlby (from Juno). That cast alone is enough to convince me to see this, but you have to check out the trailer as well. I can't tell if this is some sort of cell phone thriller, about a big turning point in their relationship, or about a girl trying to come out of the closet. I'm hoping it will all make more sense once I actually see it. Thanks to MSN for debuting the trailer today. You can check it out below.

I'm currently in London at the moment for a brief visit surrounding Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox.
