Teen Actress Mia Wasikowska Joins Gus Van Sant's Restless

Mia Wasikowska

She may not be a household name yet (and it certainly doesn't help that her last name is an intimidating jumble of consonants and vowels), but 19-year-old Australian actress Mia Wasikowska will soon be thrust into the spotlight when her performance as the title character in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland hits theaters in March. However, the teen actress is already moving onto her next role as THR reports that she is the first actor to join Academy Award nominated director Gus Van Sant's Restless, a dark coming-of-age drama adapted from a play written by newcomer Jason Lew, who will also be penning the screenplay.

Warren Ellis' Comic Series 'Gravel' Being Adapted by Legendary

Gravel

Legendary Pictures is developing a feature adaptation of the Warren Ellis comic book property "Gravel," as announced by Heat Vision. Other comic properties from Warren Ellis in development around Hollywood include Red (set to star Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman) and Ocean. The "Gravel" series blends espionage and dark fantasy in tracking the modern-day exploits of British "combat magician" William Gravel. Ellis first introduced the character in a 1999 limited series of graphic novels entitled "Strange Kiss." Ellis will serve as executive producer and write the screenplay. Sounds like a cool story to adapt and a comic I should read.

Twisted Pictures Takes Control of Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Twisted Pictures, the production company behind the Saw franchise, is grabbing another series with a penchant for sharp, stabbing kills as Variety reports that they are taking control of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. Twisted is apparently trying to partner with Lionsgate in this new venture in an effort to "contemporize" (which isn't even a word) the storyline for a (surprise!) 3-D film to be scripted by The Grudge writer Stephen Susco. And if you didn't think that one more horror remake was enough, buckle your seatbelts kids because this deal is looking to get pregnant with a few films in a new series! Oh, joy!

Kristen Bell to Star Opposite Christina Aguilera in Burlesque

Kristen Bell / Christina Aguilera

The combination of Kristen Bell, Christina Aguilera and burlesque can only mean one thing: Justin Timberlake is a dirty rotten liar, because sexy didn't come back until just nowTHR reports that Bell (Couples Retreat) will join singer Christina Aguilera in the Steve Antin directed feature  Burlesque, which follows the rivalry of the undoubtedly scantily clad characters of Bell and Aguilera as they fight for the spotlight in "a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club, reminiscent of the nightclub in Bob Fosse's Cabaret."  Bell joins a cast that already includes Cher, Stanley Tucci and the promise of a whole lot of musical numbers.

First Real Photo from Darren Bousman's Mother's Day Remake

Mother's Day

Saw II & III director Darren Bousman's remake of Mother's Day has been rushed into production fairly quickly. It was only five months ago that we first learned it was even happening and now Bousman is already shooting this up in Canada. Darren just posted the first official photo from the remake on his Twitter today. It's not a behind-the-scenes shot but rather an actual photo showing Patrick Flueger (I think?) wrestling with what looks to be Jaime King. Either way it's a pretty dynamic first look at the movie, although it doesn't show much (in terms of story). Bousman also debuted a behind-the-scenes first look on IGN today as well.

Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans Trailer

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

First Look has debuted an official trailer for Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans today on Yahoo. This trailer is a lot less comedic than the early promo trailer that we ran back in May. And let me tell you, this is actually a great movie. I know that I said I hated it initially, but my mind changed after I saw it in Telluride (read my review), and now I'm a huge supporter. And by the way, those iguanas come from Herzog's crazy mind, he actually just added them for the hell of it, not any real reason (he actually said this during an intro in Telluride). Anyway, check out the trailer below and please see this.

Spike Jonze and Max Records' Short Film 'Vampire Attack'

Vampire Attack

I promised I wouldn't share any more footage from Where the Wild Things Are, but then I came across this! I've seen the movie already and it's wonderful, thanks especially to Max Records' performance as the kid in it. I don't know where this came from, but it's a little behind-the-scenes video showing director Spike Jonze and Max Records making a 30-second short film called Vampire Attack. Yea it's funky and fun, but that's exactly the kind of spirit that made this movie so amazing. Other examples of this kind of brilliance can be found in the book they're putting out - I took some photos here and here. Anyway, check this out!

Danny Boyle's Next Project Shoots Next Year, But What Is It?

Aron Ralston - Danny Boyle

One filmmaker we haven't heard a lot from recently is Danny Boyle, which is unfortunate considering I love the guy and want to see him already working on another project. However, The Playlist claims to have figured out exactly what Boyle will be shooting next, a project we've already written about before. Boyle recently talked with Digital Spy about his "next movie" and apparently said it was everything but one single project (or so The Playlist thinks). That project being the one about the Utah mountain climber who had to amputate his own arm with a dull knife when it got pinned down by a boulder while hiking. Bring it!

Official Poster Debuts for Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones

The Lovely Bones Poster

Paramount has debuted the first official (teaser?) poster for Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones on Yahoo. This highly anticipated adaptation stars Saoirse Ronan, Rachel Weisz, Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon, and Stanley Tucci. Now this is a beautiful poster! But then again, I wouldn't expect anything less from Peter Jackson. I love the beautiful pastel colors, the lack of floating faces, a simple image with a tree and a girl running. Simple, but effective. I'm still very excited to see this movie, I've got high hopes for it, and I don't expect to be let down. I'm sure we'll see another trailer in the next few months as well. Take a look below!

Must Watch: Linklater's Me and Orson Welles Official Trailer

Me and Orson Welles Trailer

Freestyle has debuted the official US trailer for Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles on Yahoo. It's a huge improvement over the first promo trailer we ran back in August. This is really a tough sell - they're trying to get the High School Musical fans interested in a film about a stage play while also enticing Richard Linklater fans and admirers of Orson Welles. That's an eclectic group of moviegoers that this is being sold to, but either way, I highly suggest everyone check out this trailer. I think Me and Orson Welles is a highly underrated film with a lead performance by Christian McKay (as Welles) that at least deserves an Oscar.

James Horner's Avatar Score Promises to Be 'Hugely Cinematic'

James Horner - Avatar

I normally don't talk about movie scores before a movie comes out, but today I'm making an exception because it's Avatar, and I love James Cameron. MovieScore Magazine recently did an interview with Mike Knobloch, the executive VP of Fox Music, talking about composer James Horner (known for his work on movies like Braveheart, Apollo 13, Titanic) and his score for Avatar. While this could've been just another interview, Knobloch went all out, saying that the score he's working on will be "epic" and "hugely cinematic." Anyone else getting chills just thinking about it? Okay, sure that was cheesy, but I love great movie scores!

Wesley Snipes and Abel Ferrera Will Play a Game of Death

Wesley Snipes

Wesley Snipes might be the only actor to make the jump from vampire hunting to tax evasion.  While Snipes has certainly had his fair share of great performances, his spotlight gradually faded.  Let's face it, an actor has a real problem when there's an entire section on his Wikipedia page dedicated to "legal problems." But everyone loves a comeback, and Snipes is attempting to make the leap from straight-to-DVD releases back to theatrically released films as Variety reports he's teaming with director Abel Ferrera (who last worked with Snipes on the 1990 cult film King of New York) for the action-thriller Game of Death.
