Michael Mann Developing Biopic on Photographer Robert Capa

Robert Capa

Columbia Pictures and director Michael Mann will team to tell the story of renowned war photographer Robert Capa, with a focus on his two-year romance with fellow photog Gerda Taro during the Spanish Civil War. The story begins in Paris in 1935, where Capa, a refugee from Hungary, met Taro, a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany. The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War a year later began Capa's emergence as the most renowned war photographer ever and established Taro as the first frontline female battle photographer. She was killed in the Battle of Brunete in 1937; Capa was shattered by her death and never married after that.

Paranormal Activity Expanding Nationwide This Weekend

Paranormal Activity

If you haven't heard yet, Paranormal Activity is getting a lot of buzz for being the scariest movie of the year, or even the last few years. I just sent a good friend of mine who loves horror movies to a screening a few days ago and he loved it and it takes a lot to impress him. Paramount has been running a promotion for Paranormal Activity where interested moviegoers can "Demand It" and try and get the movie to come to their city (since its only been playing in very limited release). Thanks to the success of that promo, they'll now be opening the movie nationwide (and not just only at midnight) this upcoming Friday, October 9th.

Fantastic Fest Review: Shimako Sato's K-20: Legend of the Mask

K-20: Legend of the Mask

It was my very last day at Fantastic Fest and I had a huge gap in my schedule. As I was leaving the Alamo Drafthouse, I was stopped by Aaron Morgan, who asked if I was going to see a movie called K-20. I said I wasn't and he started telling me about how great it was and that I need to see it because its only ever showed in Japan up until this point. After juggling the possibility in my mind, I checked out a trailer on YouTube, and decided to walk in last minute. Thank you Aaron, because I loved this movie! He described it to me as a movie that Christopher Nolan would be making if he was in Japan - and he's dead on with that description.

Check These Out: On Set Photos from the Red Dawn Remake

Red Dawn Remake Set Photos

Be disturbed at not understanding. That's one of the phrases the Chinese are using to convince us that we weren't really free when we were run by a Democratic government before they invaded. A new blog called RedDawn2010.com has been following the Red Dawn remake very closely, which includes posting new photos from the set in Pontiac, MI (doubling as Spokane) as often as they can. In one of their galleries they have a few great photos of the set dressing in the small town where the film takes place. It shows all of the Chinese propaganda that was put up in the town as part of their invasion. Anyway, check out these photos!

Indie Trailer Sunday: John Woo's Red Cliff Official Trailer

Red Cliff Trailer

Magnet debuted the official US trailer for John Woo's Red Cliff on Apple last week, which will finally (after two years) be hitting US theaters in November as part of the Six Shooter Film Series V2. We actually ran the very first teaser trailer for Red Cliff back in February of 2008, just to show you how long this film has been around. I still haven't seen it but I am looking forward to seeing it, just because looks so incredibly epic. As expected, this doesn't feature any dialogue, so as to not scare away Americans who hate subtitles. It does look pretty damn good, it may just be tough to sit through four hours of this. Will you be seeing this?

Brandon's Word: The Invention of Lying is a Landmark Comedy

The Invention of Lying

Sometimes there are film premises, mere loglines, that cause me to clench my jaw and flush green with jealousy due to their brilliance. Usually, the premises' brilliance is born of its simplicity. And The invention of Lying is brilliant. And, on the surface, it is simple. The film takes place in an alternate world where humans have not evolved with the capacity to lie. Humans are incapable of saying anything that is not -- no matter how callous, inappropriate, or self-deprecating. That is, until Mark Bellison, played by the incomparable Ricky Gervais, tells humankind's first lie. Simple. Deceptively simple.

Watch This: Second and Final Saw VI Trailer Has Arrived!

Saw VI Trailer

A second, and presumably the last, trailer for Lionsgate's Saw VI has debuted on Yahoo tonight. I'll admit that I've still got a soft spot for the Saw movies; every year when each new one is released I go with my good friend and watch it. I've seen every one and I'll probably continue seeing them as long as they keep making them and putting them out in theaters. I wasn't excited for Saw VI until I saw this trailer - it looks intense and awesome, just like almost every other one previously and I can't wait to see what crazy traps and twists and turns they've cooked up for us this time. At least it's an improvement over the first teaser. Watch below!

First Look: Liam Neeson as Zeus in Clash of the Titans & More

Liam Neeson in Clash of the Titans

A lot of new photos from Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans seem to be hitting this weekend. A few days ago we wrote about Empire's new cover photo with Sam Worthington as Perseus. Earlier today, Empire released another batch of high res photos featuring Worthington and some odd mythological creatures (who the heck is that big guy standing next to him?). Additionally, Entertainment Weekly debuted more photos, including our first photo of Liam Neeson as Zeus standing in his fortress up on Mt. Olympus (which looks much like the original). Anyway, check out these photos and stay tuned for a trailer soon (or so we hope).

Second Official Trailer for Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island

Shutter Island Trailer

Paramount has debuted a second new trailer for Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island today on Apple. This new version features a few of the same scenes we'd seen in the original trailer plus plenty more we haven't seen yet. It also doesn't spoil any of the twists and turns anymore, thankfully. The only other major change is the release date - from October to February of next year (as we already reported). Despite all that, I still think this looks incredible. It's no B-rate thriller, this looks fantastic, like it could've been one of this year's best. I've got very high hopes for this, Scorsese is brilliant, and I expect nothing less for Shutter Island.

Goyer on His Ghost Rider 2 Script Plus a Magneto Update

Nic Cage in Ghost Rider

Last week a new story hit about upcoming Marvel projects, including Daredevil, Silver Surfer, and a Ghost Rider sequel. In that story, it was revealed that Sony had decided to bring on writer/director David Goyer for Ghost Rider 2, since he had written a script 9 years ago for Ghost Rider that they were now going to use for the sequel. Collider recently talked with Goyer and learned that all of that was true and that they're going back to his script and only polishing it to tone it down from R to PG-13. He also gave a brief update on X-Men Origins: Magneto, another Goyer comic book project that's been in the works for a very long time.

Polanski's The Ghost Will Be Finished With or Without Him

Roman Polanski's The Ghost

We're not a gossip site, so any updates we provide on the Roman Polanski front will be related to him as a filmmaker, not his personal life or anything else. Earlier this week we wrote a story about Polanski's newest feature film The Ghost being delayed due to his arrest in Switzerland a week ago. Polanski's agent said at the time that there is still a few months of post-production work left that would be waiting for his (hopeful) release before being finished. However, an update coming from a conference for exhibitors in Deauville, France (via SlashFilm) seems to indicate that it will get finished for a 2010 release with or without Polanski.

Brandon's Word: Whip It, Whip It... Not So Good

Whip It Review

Whip It, the first film directed by Drew Barrymore, above all else, feels like a directorial debut. Though, that's not to say that it's a complete failure -- but it certainly is not a resounding success. The film, set just outside Austin, Texas, is yet another remark on the metamorphosis from childhood to adulthood where Bliss Cavendar, played by forever-to-be-a-teenager Ellen Page, is struggling to become her own person, follow her own path while attempting to reconcile with the person she so recently was -- and most importantly, the person her parents still believe her to be. This coming-of-age story, like all of them, is framed by a unique
