Wicked Awesome Wicked Series Ignites DreamWorks' Wick

Wicked

DreamWorks has acquired the rights to the Wicked book series, written by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie, according to Variety. No, not the musical Wicked. Or the book said musical was based on. But the young adult book series centered on a young woman who discovers she's the descendant of a powerful coven of witches. But, in a cruel twist of fate, she falls in love with a boy who just so happens to be a member of a rival coven! Oh no! Written by Aaron and Matthew Benay (whose screenplay 1906 is being brought to the screen by director Brad Bird), Wicked is as of yet unknown to be but a single film or the start of a franchise.

Hold Steady, Letterman Writer Collaborates on Fargo Rock City

Fargo Rock City

Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey in Rural North Dakota, Chuck Klosterman's 2001 memoir chronicling his time growing up in North Dakota and banding together with the few other metal-heads in his high school, has been acquired by Craig Finn, frontman of The Hold Steady, and Tom Ruprecht, longtime writer on "The Late Show with David Letterman." The duo will be co-writing and producing the feature, a screenplay set in the 1980s revolving around a group of high school senior social misfits who attempt to break out of their geeky stereotype by living the life of sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll.

Neill Blomkamp's Next Sci-Fi Project Gets the Greenlight!

Neill Blomkamp

Looks like we won't be seeing Neill Blomkamp direct District 10 anytime soon, as he's directing another original sci-fi project next. The BFDealMemo blog reports that Media Rights Capital has committed funding for Blomkamp's next film, a currently untitled original sci-fi film that will begin production by mid-2010. MRC is giving Blomkamp creative freedom and a production commitment that isn't contingent on domestic distribution; he will also get an ownership stake in the finished product. However, Peter Jackson will not be back to produce this, but Blomkamp say that isn't of any major concern for him on his second outing.

RZA Talks 'Man With The Iron Fist' and 'Last Dragon' Remake

RZA Eating Noodles

There's a martial arts project I've been looking forward to ever since it was first announced - The Man With the Iron Fist. Back in July of last year it was revealed that Eli Roth and RZA would team up to make an old school kung fu movie and RZA would make his directorial debut on it. Not much has been said about it since then, but RZA was interviewed by The A.V. Club and not only gave a good update on The Man With the Iron Fist, but also talked about The Last Dragon remake that he's involved with as well. Neither of the projects have gotten a greenlight just yet, but both of them sound like they're moving along quite smoothly.

Brian Bendis Says Torso Film Adaptation is 'Not Dead Yet'

Torso

Back in January, we reported that Paramount had lost the rights to their adaptation of Torso, the graphic novel written by Brian Bendis. The project was apparently moving along swiftly with David Fincher in line to direct and Matt Damon in line to star, but fell apart last minute. Bendis gave an update to MTV recently and not only confirms that it was a lot closer to starting than we thought, but promises it's "not dead yet." "Last December, we got the green light... and then three days later there was no green light. Imagine you get a call, you won the lottery... [then] no, you didn't... It was a very exciting moment, and then it went away."

Does Dylan Baker's Return to Spider-Man Mean We'll See Lizard?

Dylan Baker in Spider-Man

Don't read too much into this, but actor Dylan Baker confirmed at a Q&A for a Trick 'r Treat screening in New York City last night that he would indeed be returning for Spider-Man 4. UGO has the scoop and says that apparently Trick 'r Treat director Mike Dougherty and Baker were joking a lot during the Q&A, which doesn't necessarily mean that this is a joke. "According to reports, Baker said that he had just gotten his first call concerning Spider-Man 4 that very day." So if Baker, who played Dr. Curt Connors in both Spider-Man 2 and 3, is back, does that mean we may finally see him become the villain The Lizard in Spider-Man 4?

Official Poster for Clint Eastwood's Invictus Finally Debuts

Invictus - Matt Damon

Can Warner Brothers repeat the success of Gran Torino twice? Yahoo has debuted the official poster for Clint Eastwood's Invictus, which stars Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as rugby player Francois Pienaar. We're not sure when the first trailer will hit (probably later this week), but I'm just as excited to see this poster, mainly because Invictus is the last big Oscar wildcard. Most Oscar pundits are saying that Invictus might end up the big Best Picture winner, but they're saying that without having seen a single frame of footage. This poster looks great, so at least they're off to a good start. Check it out below!

Jackie Chan Headlining a Remake of Shaolin Temple in China

Jackie Chan

More cheesy kung fu "chopsocky" humor, but this time since it's actually coming from China, it won't be as bad as the Hollywood-produced crap like The Spy Next Door. Jackie Chan will star in a remake of the 1982 movie Shaolin Temple alongside of Andy Lau (The Warlords), Nicholas Tse (The Storm Warriors), and actress Fan Bingbing (Shinjuku Incident). The film is a $29 million Chinese production directed by Hong Kong's Benny Chan, who made New Police Story and Rob-B-Hood. This will also feature martial arts star Wu Jing, Yu Shaoqun and "thousands of Shaolin disciples from the temple", which just sounds awesome.

A Trip Through Disney History for The Princess and the Frog

Disneyland - The Princess and the Frog

The magic of Disney. There's nothing quite like it. There's nothing quite like Disneyland, or Walt Disney and his Imagineers, or the 48 animated movies created in his name over more than 70 years. A few weeks ago, Disney invited a small group of movie journalists, myself included, to experience the classic world of Walt Disney in a trip to Disneyland, the Disney Archives, and finally, back to the Animation Studio for a look at The Princess and the Frog and a chat with directors Ron Clements and John Musker. You may be wondering what a trip to Disneyland has to do with any movie and remarkably it has a lot to do with one.

Check This Out: TwitCritics Real-Time Movie Ratings from Twitter

TwitCritics

While Rotten Tomatoes still remains the king of the movie rating world, I've started to really care less about them, mainly because of their ridiculous rules that allow for such hacks as Armond White to be included in the Tomatometer. Thanks to SlashFilm, I finally discovered a potential alternative called TwitCritics (twitcritics.com) that capitalizes on the Twitter craze, compiling reviews of movies and giving an average rating, like Rotten Tomatoes. There are obviously issues (such as how does it know what you said was good or bad), but I think this may be the first time that Twitter feedback is being harnessed in a usable way.

Charlize Theron & Tom Hardy Might Be Cast in Mad Max 4?

Charlize Theron / Tom Hardy

Well, according to E! Online, George Miller might finally be making that Mad Max 4 movie after all. E! claims that "multiple sources" have told them that George Miller is looking to cast Charlize Theron as the lead female in the upcoming film. I'm guessing she won't be playing the new Aunty Entity (as made famous by Tina Turner), but a badass road warrior babe instead. And since Mel Gibson won't be returning as Mad Max himself (ah damn!), E! also says that Miller is looking to cast British actor Tom Hardy (who you may recognize from Bronson or RocknRolla) in the lead role opposite Theron. One great pick, one not so great.

Korean Gangster Film 'A Dirty Carnival' Getting an English Remake

A Dirty Carnival

I love Korean gangster films. While there are filmmakers like Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho, the one film that really opened my eyes was The Chaser, which I saw back in 2008, and is why I'm writing about this one. I don't know anything about A Dirty Carnival, but I dig that title and the plot and will be seeking it out as soon as I can. Variety reports that the 2006 film, written and directed by Yoo Ha, is being remade by Sparkler Entertainment (National Treasure) and CJ Entertainment, the big Korean company behind most of Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook's films. Chris Hauty (Never Back Down) will be writing the script.
