Is Peter Segal Taking Over for Rodriguez on The Jetsons Movie?

It only takes about five months for a project to completely fall apart. Back in June we reported that Robert Rodriguez was aiming to shoot his live-action Jetsons movie sometime next year. Rodriguez has a lot on his plate and is obviously still producing both Machete (which is in post-production) and Predators (which is currently shooting), but most of his projects have fallen apart, including his sci-fi project Nerveracker (which Dimension Films bumped off their slate a few months ago). Back on The Jetsons, though, Pajiba is reporting that the project fell apart during the summer and Rodriguez left. Who is he being replaced by?
According to their sources, Peter Segal, who last directed Get Smart for Warner Brothers, is the studio's top choice. Apparently his deal is not in place yet, but it's a sure bet he will be the one who ends up taking over the reigns. They also say that the screenplay that John Altschuler and Dave Krisnky (both of "King of the Hill" and Blades of Glory previously) wrote last year, while good, wasn't good enough. The studio couldn't get any actors attached, like Jim Carrey, and are going to be scrapping it and looking to write an entirely new one once Segal is on-board. But they haven't hired a new writer and won't until Segal is signed.
I like Pete Segal, I think he's a good director with a good balance of action and comedy. I want him to direct the Shazam movie, but it looks like that won't be happening for a long time. So in the meantime, if he gets to take over The Jetsons, why not? Pajiba says that Segal "is definitely a downgrade from Rodriguez." I don't necessarily agree because I'm sure the version Rodriguez would've made was going to be more like his kids movies (e.g. Spy Kids, Shorts) than his adult work. I mean, it's The Jetsons, a frickin' cartoon from the 60's, it's not going to be dark and epic, it's going to be light and playful! Hopefully we get a confirmation soon.

Actually, I think the Segal directed Jetsons' ends up far superior to anything Rodriguez would do with it. Of course I think RR is a better director but his 'kiddie' oriented films always turn out shitty.

I agree with you Alex. I think Peter Segal is a great choice. I really like his films "Anger Management" "The Longest Yard' "Get Smart".
The Jetsons is more comedy than Sci-Fi and Peter Segal knows how to make a good comedy.
