Chuck Russell Directing an Arabian Nights Remake in 3D

Another day, another remake. Today I am sad to report that the 1942 classic Arabian Nights is going to be ravaged in a $70 million remake being directed by Chuck Russell. Variety reports that Russell, whose credits include A Nightmare on Elm Street: Part III, The Blob, The Mask, Eraser, and The Scorpion King, will be "reworking" Arabian Nights into a 3D film with a "new spin on the classic" story. In this version, we will follow a young commander who, after his king is killed in a palace coup, joins forces with Sinbad, Aladdin and his genie to rescue Scheherazade and her kingdom from dark powers. Sounds like it'll be a good time.
"Through the use of a new generation of visual technologies, we will be able to quite literally take audiences around the world on a magic carpet ride," Russell said. I hope that quote gave you chills. I know that their intentions are good for this remake, but this just seems like a huge gimmick, just like Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D. I have never seen the original Arabian Nights, I definitely plan to, but I'm not looking forward to this. I could go on about how Russell, as well, has lost his touch as a director and shouldn't be returning with a $70 million 3D project, but that's a story for another day, I suppose. Anyone excited?

I have read the script and it is pretty much an over top cheesed out rip off of the mummy series that barely holds a light to the source material. Yay more Middle Eastern characters played by non Middle Easterns…Let Russell ruin the poor company financing this project, itll be one less film company making awful choices.

I must say. I lam looking forward to Chuck Russell's next movie. Love his stuff so much. The use of special effects in the Mask was groundbreaking. I know he will blow our minds with this story. I happened to read couple of his scripts and let me tell you: He is a Genius! As far as I know he completely re-wrote the Mask from a horror to a comedy. IT MADE WHOOPING 400 MILLION DOLLARS!!!
