Sony Adapting the Classic Board Game Risk as a Feature Film

What the? How the hell are they going to do this? Sony Pictures has announced today that they've acquired the rights to the classic board game Risk, which was first invented in 1957 by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse as "La Conquête du Monde" (Conquest of the World). Two years later, in 1959, Parker Brothers published the game we all came to know as Risk. Since then, nearly a dozen different variations of Risk have mapped out epic battles in the Star Wars universe, Middle Earth, Narnia, the moon, and various periods in world history. And now Sony is planning to bring the game itself, maybe the entire world, to the big screen.
"The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make Risk a classic, thoroughly engaging game. Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie," said Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad via press release. The only other movie I can think of that's similar to Risk is War Games, which had its own gimmick with the computer, so even that isn't the same. I just don't understand how they can take a game about conquering the entire world and turn it into a single movie. Who would be the good guys and the bad guys?

on a side note… anyone play diplomacy… thats an awsome board game, that and axis and alies
perhaps they'll adapt those too once this movie becomes a boxoffice steaming pile of shit and they start thinking about the options for sequals
i mean come on, has thinking up something new become so taboo that they are drawing on board games as established IPs…
next up, movies based on antiquate childhood games…. duck duck goose, ball in a cup, wheel and a stick and hanging tire near body of water will be coming to a theater near you

Instead of making a film based on Risk that has no plot and is a terrible idea why can't they just green light one of the Napoleon projects out there.
Considering Risk is a Napoleonic-era based game it would make more sense and would actually be a far better film.
Even though I enjoyed playing Risk growing up I can think of nothing appealing about seeing a film based on it. It just wouldn't work and is based too much on a gimmick.

Cgi soldiers that are colored green,red,blue,and yellow fight in a massive world(which is New York) and battle for rivalary,strategy and RISK.

Yeah, as I said in another post, this will go on, and on, and on…more and more untranslatable board games and video games, those with no plot, or background whatsoever, will be translated to film, and we will see more and more pointless movies…..Yay!!!!

This is either an odd coincidence or what was seemingly a joke coming to fruition. In a recent podcast for the 30 for 30 series on ESPN, Peter Berg mentioned in what I thought seemed like a joking way, that he wanted to make a movie based on Risk… hrmmmm

Sigh! I am afraid Wylles is right and we will soon have to dread the making of "Shoots and Ladders", "Candyland", "The Game of Life", "Battleship", "Parcheesi", Backgammon, Chess and Checkers into films.
