Sony Wants Marc Webb or Bennett Miller to Direct Moneyball

Yep, even more news on the Moneyball front, if you can handle it. If you recall, back in June we reported on the big fiasco surrounding Sony pulling Steven Soderbergh off of production days before shooting was supposed to start. And yet because they're still fond of the concept, they've been rushing to try and turn it around, which at first involved hiring Aaron Sorkin to do a rewrite of the script. And now Steve Zeitchik from Risky Business reports that they have two new directors lined up, but haven't settled on one of them yet. The top choices: Capote director Bennett Miller and 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb.

As we explained way back when, Sony has been having somewhat of a hard time finding a replacement director, because Brad Pitt has to like whoever they choose and everyone else has to approve of them, too. Risky Biz says that "while the studio has not formally made any offers, a number of names have surfaced," including Miller and Webb at the top of the list. Both of them have a lot of other projects lined up, but none of those projects are ready to go, which makes them both great candidates, since Sony is desperate to get Moneyball back into production right away. I'm sure we'll find out which one Sony likes more soon.

Most readers of this site are probably familiar with Marc Webb, considering he did some blogging for us, and because I'm a huge fan of 500 Days of Summer. I checked with him via email before writing this and even he seemed a bit unsure of whether or not he was the frontrunner. Personally, I'm excited to see him direct anything, I just want more Webb movies, and whether it's Moneyball or Jesus Christ Superstar, I don't care. As for Bennett Miller though, I've never seen Capote and don't know much about him. If you're familiar with Moneyball, or just like either of these guys, which one would you rather have direct this?

Really Alex? You've never seen Capote? I'm from Rochester where Hoffman is considered a god so that shocks me that you've never seen the film that brought him into the spotlight.

You should definitely give it a watch, you won't regret it.

I'd be very happy with either director, but I'm leaning towards Webb because his style seems more contemporary.

This book was cool, Brad Pitt will rock it as Billy Beane! I would like to see Marc Webb do it. His style would work well with the story!

The film could dynamically become something significant within either hands of these two directors….

That said. I believe Marc Webb's vision and style would be more accurate for this picture.
