Indie Trailer Sunday: Corneliu Porumboiu's Police, Adjective
November 22, 2009

by Alex Billington
IFC Films debuted the US trailer for Corneliu Porumboiu's Police, Adjective earlier this week on Apple. This is one of those films that I missed at Cannes and have heard good things about ever since. It won two awards in Cannes and has since played well at a few other major festivals around the world. That photo you see above is not from the film itself, but is the image used on the poster for Police, Adjective and is the same photo that caught my attention when I first saw it in Cannes program. It doesn't really look like a comedy, but apparently it's a "whip-smart, dryly funny comedy." I'd say I'm definitely interested in checking it out.

A young, undercover police officer refuses to arrest another teenager for offering drugs to his friends.
Police, Adjective (aka Politist, Adjectiv in Romanian) is both written and directed by Romanian filmmaker Corneliu Porumboiu, of 12:08 East of Bucharest, Liviu's Dream, and A Trip to the City previously. This first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year and won the FIPRESCI Prize and Un Certain Regard Jury Prize. IFC Films is bringing Police, Adjective to limited theaters starting on December 23rd this winter.

It was soooooo long and boring. The funny parts were few and far between and couldn't make up for the slow drabness of everything. It isn't very fun watching a policeman follow and stake out a suspect… don't worry if you miss this one, you aren't missing much.

Great! Looks interesting. But the plot isn't a big deal. It will be fun to watch…

Surprised to see a romanian movie around here.
I've seen a picture of this a while back but i forgot the name . It has Dragos Bucur , one of the best younger romanian actors. Can't wait to see it.

the last good romanian flcik was 4 months 3 weeks 2 days or something of that sort. i never saw it but it won a bunch of awards. its good to see some small gems come out of there ever so often, but like everything low budget and with no VFX, if the script and acting isnt there, there's no reason to see it.

Great idea to post Indie Trailer Sunday. Genius.
Now about this movie, while yes, it looks very slow, I was drawn into it. The music and colors made it seem like a sarcastic film noir. If I see it playing in a theater near me, I may check it out.
Now back to the author of the blog, Mr. Billington, what ever happened to the "Theater Hopper" web-comic? I realize it has not been on here for many moons, but it was a fun way to read reviews on new releases. Bring it back, and use it to write new reviews on movies. That's my 2-cents.

Or just write new reviews on new movies in general?

What no explosions?
It had good intro graphics, underplayed acting, didn't tell the whole story in 3 minutes and wasn't packed full of shit jokes.
These Europeans and their crazy film making eh?
