Casting Tidbits: Jennifer Hudson, Craig Ferguson & Eric Dane
You can't handle the Casting Tidbits! First, Variety reports Jennifer Hudson has been cast in Winnie, a biopic of the former wife of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela. Directed by veteran South African filmmaker Darrell J. Roodt (who also co-wrote the script with Andre Pieterse and Paul L. Johnson) the story will tell the whole story, good and bad. Focus ranges from her image as a mother, wife and steadfast supporter of her activist husband, to campaigning for his release from jail and fight against apartheid and her condemned association with a bodyguard who murdered a 14-year old alleged informer.

Check This Out: Badass Photos from Thai Film Bang Rajan 2
I don't know what this is, but it looks frickin' awesome! Twitch has found a handful of new photos from an upcoming Thai film called Bang Rajan 2 that's actually the sequel to a little-known film from 2000 called Bang Rajan. The original is a period epic about a group of outnumbered villagers standing up to a stronger military force. It was apparently pretty damn good, despite not getting too far outside of Thailand. However, nine years later and they're back with a sequel which, this time, is being produced by Phranakorn Film, one of Thailand's biggest production companies and distributors. With that said, you need to see these photos!

Kick-Ass Teaser Trailer with Matthew Vaughn Commentary
Those sneaky French! Last week, Lionsgate debuted the teaser trailer for Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass. Because of an accidental early leak, that teaser kind of got lost in the mix with the Clash of the Titans trailer (which was also released the same day). So, in an effort to give this great trailer some time in the spotlight on its own, and also because it's pretty cool to see with commentary, I'm featuring this new version of the same teaser that now includes a bit of commentary from Matthew Vaughn. Premiere in France called up Vaughn and got him to talk about the movie and included it over the top of this trailer. So check it out!

Carl Rinsch Directing 47 Ronin Instead of the Alien Prequel
Remember back in May, we reported that first-time feature director Carl Rinsch would supposedly be helming the Alien prequel that Fox was developing? If not that, you surely remember hearing about a project called 47 Ronin with Keanu Reeves attached to star, right? Well, THR has confirmed today that instead of directing the Alien prequel (Ridley Scott himself is said to be directing that), Rinsch will make his feature debut with 47 Ronin, an epic period samurai swordsmen movie setup at Universal with producer Scott Stuber. According to Variety, Reeves is still attached to star. Universal wants this shooting right away.

Bradley Cooper and Sam Worthington Join Texas Killing Fields?
Way back in February after Danny Boyle took home the Academy Award for Best Director for his work on Slumdog Millionaire, the filmmaker was considering a whole slew of different projects to be his next. One that he mentioned, The Texas Killing Fields, is finally moving forward, but without Boyle attached, as Pajiba reveals they have inside info saying that Bradley Cooper and Sam Worthington are attached to the film that is being produced by Michael Mann who has apparently passed on directing responsibilities to his daughter Ami Mann. Sure, great, but when my dad gives me a movie it's usually just on DVD.

Must Watch: New Trailer for Rob Marshall's Sexy Musical Nine
As a huge fan of Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini, it's great to see such a vibrant trailer for Rob Marshall's Nine, a musical based on the original musical of the same name, which was derived from an Italian play by Mario Fratti which itself was inspired by Federico Fellini's autobiographical film 8½. Much like Marshall's Chicago, this new trailer is chock full of singing, dancing and scantily clad women including the prominently featured Kate Hudson, and the laughable appearance of Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson as Fellini's iconic slutty, crazy, dancing character Saraghina. Now all that remains to be seen is if Daniel Day-Lewis really can sing.

Dead Arrivals: Linklater's Liars (A to E) & McG's 20,000 Leagues
Two project have both been confirmed as dead on arrival today. First, Richard Linklater's very next project, Liars (A to E), has been canned, the first victim of Miramax's downsizing. Back in early October, the indie studio was forced to cut most of their employees and reduce the number of films they put out to only three or so per year. Movieline reports today that Liars (A to E), about a newly single girl who takes a roadtrip to Obama's inauguration, which was supposed to be next from the studio, is no longer happening. "It didn't really work out. It's tough," Linklater told them. He had even cast Rebecca Hall and Kat Dennings as leads.

Casting Tidbits: Stephen Root, Stephen Lang & Thora Birch
Casting Tidbits roll out! First up, THR reports character actor Stephen Root has joined the casts of two vastly different forthcoming projects. In the Migeul Arteta directed comedy Cedar Rapids, Root will play the proud owner of an insurance company alongside Ed Helms, John C. Reilly and Anne Heche. On the other end of the spectrum, Robert Redford's historical drama, The Conspirator will see Root stepping into the role of a principal witness for the prosecution in the trial of supposed Confederate sympathizer, Mary Surratt, who is tried as a conspirator in the assassination of iconic President Abraham Lincoln.

J.J. Abrams Still Unsure About Directing the Star Trek Sequel
And he's not directing Mission: Impossible 4 either! So what will J.J. Abrams be directing next (that's not a TV show)? Last night, Paramount held a party for the premiere of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek on DVD and Blu-Ray (Amazon). ComingSoon caught up with Abrams briefly and asked him about a couple of projects currently in the works. As usual, he didn't reveal much about any of the projects, but did reply with a rather interesting answer when asked if he'd decided whether he'd return to direct the Star Trek sequel. Everyone still believes he'll return, but his answer wasn't a definite yes, and it sounds like we won't know for a while.

Rob Marshall Confirmed as Director of Pirates of the Caribbean 4
So it was first rumored back in July that Oscar nominated director Rob Marshall (of both Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha previously) might be taking over Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in place of Gore Verbinski. As much as I didn't want this to happen, it turns out that it definitely is Marshall's job (at least as long as Disney convinces Johnny Depp to return and shoot this next year). Marshall recently appeared at a DGA screening of his new film Nine (another musical) and, according to a report on AICN (via The Playlist), confirmed that Pirates of the Caribbean was next for him. Here's what AICN's reader said.

Joe Wright to Direct New Action-Adventure Thriller 'Hanna'
Director Joe Wright is switching genres once again. Heat Vision announces that Joe Wright is in talks to direct Focus Features' new action-adventure thriller titled Hanna. Wright last directed The Soloist as well as Atonement and Pride & Prejudice before that. Hanna is described as similar in tone to La Femme Nikita as well as the ever-popular Bourne movies. Newcomer Seth Lochhead wrote the script that was also revised by David Farr (of BBC's "MI-5" series). This will be Wright's very next project, not the originally slated adaptation of Indian Summer, which was put on hold due to rising budget concerns. Read on for the plot.
