Must Watch: Noah Baumbach's Greenberg Trailer with Ben Stiller

Greenberg Trailer

Ben Stiller has gone indie. Focus Features has just debuted the official trailer for Noah Baumbach's newest film Greenberg starring Ben Stiller, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Chris Messina, and Greta Gerwig. This looks like a huge improvement over Baumbach's last film, Margot at the Wedding, and a big departure for Stiller as well. I'm a fan of Baumbach primarily because I loved The Squid and the Whale and I've been waiting to see him direct another film on that level. While this is a comedy, it's hard to laugh at, but it's that honest, heartfelt "life sucks" kind of comedy that I think makes Baumbach's films so good. Anyway, enjoy!

Check These Out: Two Sleek Posters for Rob Marshall's Nine

Rob Marshall's Nine

"This holiday season be Italian!" I'd rather just eat Italian this Christmas, but if I say that, there's a sexual connotation, too. The Weinstein Company has finally put out two different posters for their big musical Nine directed by Rob Marshall. The first poster comes from Cinematical, the second one comes from Yahoo. I think the one on the left looks a bit sloppy, so I prefer the one on the right, which is the definition of sleek with the car and everything. Plus, it just looks more well organized with the girls on the poster on the wall. I'm not as excited to see this as Ethan is, but I'll probably still check it out. Which poster do you like better?

Francis Lawrence May Direct 'In the Small' Before 'Sgt. Rock'

Francis Lawrence / In the Small

From one comic book to another. Pajiba is reporting that I Am Legend and Constantine director Francis Lawrence may end up directing an adaptation of a graphic novel called In the Small before he ends up directing the Sgt. Rock adaptation we wrote about a few weeks ago. They explain that Lawrence is attached to a lot of projects, but he doesn't have a "go project" yet, but if everything works out, he could be on In the Small, which is being produced by Akiva Goldsman. Apparently first-time writer Laura Harrington wrote a draft based on Michael Hague's graphic novel for Warner Bros. Sgt. Rock is in for rewrites, but this is ready.

Portman Leaks that Kat Dennings is Also in the Cast of Thor

Kat Dennings

This is some odd casting. MTV reports that actress Kat Dennings has also joined the cast of Kenneth Branagh's Thor movie, which starts shooting in January. But where did they get this scoop? From co-star Natalie Portman. During their interview with Portman, she revealed: "Well I'm really excited...Kat Dennings is going to be in it with me and she's a good friend and an amazing actress, so I'm looking forward to that." But what role will she play? No one knows, and everyone's guessing, but it's hard to tell. Dennings is the latest to join the already very packed cast of stars in the Marvel adaptation, including Jaimie Alexander.

New Writers Hired for Sony's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Movie

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Back in June we first reported that Sony had acquired the rights to adapt the popular PlayStation video game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune into a feature film. When it was announced, screenwriter Kyle Ward had been hired to write the script. The studio was waiting for a finished script before hiring a director. However, Latino Review now says that Ward is off the project and he's been replaced by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, two screenwriters you've probably never heard of before. The two just finished writing the new Conan movie for Lionsgate and also have credits on Sahara and Dead of Night.

A 'Fantastic' Trip to Roald Dahl's Beautiful Estate & Museum

Fantastic Mr. Fox

"Those who don't believe in magic will never find it." That quote, found in Roald Dahl's very last book The Minpins, lingered on my mind as I walked around Dahl's gorgeous farm house in England. A month ago, Fox Searchlight invited a small group of web journalists to London, England and the town of Great Missenden to visit the Roald Dahl Museum as well as his estate. While I was out there, I interviewed both Wes Anderson (watch that video) and Jason Schwartzman from Fantastic Mr. Fox, which is based on a Dahl story. This trip wouldn't have been as wonderful as it was if I weren't already a fan of the film, which I saw before I left.

Mandarin Might Still Reappear as the Villain in Iron Man 3?

Mandarin

I know we're jumping ahead here, since Iron Man 2 is another six months out, but this a pretty good story, even though it's not necessarily something we haven't heard before. Actor Faran Tahir, who played Raza, the mysterious leader of the 10 Rings in the first Iron Man, was interviewed by Moviefone UK recently for Star Trek (he plays Captain Robau in that). The interviewer jokingly says that he's probably always asked about Mandarin and Iron Man 3, yet continues to ask the question. However, Tahir's answer hints that the villain Mandarin might still pop up in the third movie, whenever it gets made sometime in the future.

Director Chris Weitz Following New Moon with The Gardener

Chris Weitz

"There are no werewolves or vampires, just a Mexican gardener in Los Angeles." Variety reports tonight that director Chris Weitz will be following up The Twilight Saga: New Moon with a new drama called The Gardener. Before jumping into the world of vampires, Weitz directed The Golden Compass and About a Boy previously. He's had a rough career so far (dealing with these last two films), but hopefully this project will allow him to settle down once again. Summit Entertainment, who released Twilight, is developing The Gardener with Weitz from a screenplay written by Eric Eason (Manito). From vampires to just a gardener?

For Your Consideration - The Hangover for Best Picture?!

The Hangover for Best Picture

Wait, what?! Yep, this is real. While browsing Variety tonight, this ad popped up on the website, asking for Academy voters to nominate the Warner Brothers' comedy The Hangover for Best Picture. We've seen plenty of For Your Consideration ads before (I featured the ad for Pixar's Up last week), but this is not an ad I ever expected to see. I liked The Hangover, but as the Best Picture? No way! What the heck is wrong with Warner Brothers? Is this a joke? It even says on the top: "For Your Consideration In All Categories." Does anyone actually think that Zach Galifianakis or Ed Helms should be nominated for Best Actor? Oh come on!

Joshua Jackson Set to Fight Off Aliens in 'UFO' Adaptation

UFO / Joshua Jackson

Though my inner-child still knows him as Charlie Conway, captain of The Mighty Ducks, actor Joshua Jackson made an impressive leap from hockey and a certain titular creek into sci-fi. On the Fox TV series "Fringe," Jackson has investigated cases that would make Mulder and Scully blush. Now he's sticking with sci-fi as Variety reports he is set to star in UFO, an adaptation of a 70's British television series about a test pilot, Paul Foster, who joins S.H.A.D.O. (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization), a covert org built under a Hollywood studio that defends Earth against aliens who are abducting humans for body parts.

The Howling Set for Reboot - Werewolves Making a Comeback?

The Howling

New Moon? More like Old Moon! Zing! Sure the second installment of the Twilight Saga raked in piles of money this past weekend, but even the trendy, emo vampire flick has illustrated that (as Will Smith's character from Men in Black might say) vampires are old and busted, but werewolves are the new hotness. With Universal's Wolfman on the horizon, another project that might benefit from this new trend came out of nowhere earlier this month, but Variety has only just caught on to the news that The Howling, the werewolf series of films spawned by Joe Dante, is set for a franchise reboot with The Howling: Reborn.

Watch This: The Making of The Road New Extended Featurette

The Making of The Road

Late last week, this 11-minute behind-the-scenes featurette for The Road appeared on Apple. I wanted to feature it because it's a great video, but it's quite excruciatingly long, especially to watch online (and not in the Special Features on the DVD). For those that have been waiting anxiously to see this movie, it finally hits theaters this week. I've got an interview with the director, John Hillcoat, that I'll be running in a few days. There's a lot of footage and, to be honest, a lot of spoilers in this, so tread carefully. And I suggest everyone watch it on Apple, it's much better quality, but enjoy it either way and don't forget to see The Road, too!
