First Official Photo (Sort Of) from Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim

Scott Pilgrim Photo

If you were following the shooting of Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World at all earlier this year, you probably know that Wright has been running a photo blog on his website, updating it with new photos every single day. But until today, he's been keeping everything a secret and not revealing anything from the movie that shouldn't be seen yet. His latest photo is a photo of a photo - not as confusing as you'd think. Our friends at SlashFilm did a bit of Photoshop work on it and whipped up a straight-on version of this first real photo of the Scott Pilgrim cast as seen below. If you're a Scott Pilgrim fan, you definitely need to see this!

James Cameron Quickly Updates His Battle Angel Adaptation

Battle Angel

A few people have been asking me what this Battle Angel project listed on James Cameron's upcoming filmography is all about. Here's our chance to explain what the movie is and give you a little update on it. James Cameron spoke with both MTV and MarketSaw recently and gave them each some juicy morsels of information on Battle Angel. The project is an adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's popular manga series from the 90's known as Battle Angel Alita. In short, the futuristic sci-fi manga is about a female cyborg warrior who is rescued from a scrapheap beneath the floating city of Tiphares by a cybermedic expert in the 26th century.

Frank Miller's Battle of Marathon 300 Prequel Titled 'Xerxes'

Xerxes

When you look back at this decade, there were actually quite a few fantastic sword-and-sandal movies, like Gladiator, Troy, 300, and so on. The trend continues strongly even next year with Clash of the Titans and Percy Jackson & the Olympians both due out before the summer even begins. Geoff Boucher looks at this trend in a new article on Hero Complex and hidden in there is a nugget of info on Frank Miller's sequel to 300. "Miller is preparing a follow-up now titled Xerxes, which begins about 10 years before the events of 300, and Snyder has expressed interest in it as a film property as well." Love the title, but what is it about?

Mel Gibson Set to Star In 'How I Spent My Summer Vacation'

Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson has quite a bit on his plate! Yesterday it was announced that he would be directing Leonardo DiCaprio in a new Viking project that we all thought was the one he would be shooting down in Veracruz, Mexico. However, Variety reports it's another new project called How I Spent My Summer Vacation that Gibson will be starring in at a prison down in Mexico starting early next year. The film is about a career criminal who gets caught by Mexican authorities and is sent to a drug- and crime-filled prison, where he learns how to survive with the help of a 9-year-old boy. Gibson wrote the screenplay, but is not directing.

Carl Rinsch Hired to Direct Universal's Black Lagoon Remake

Creature from the Black Lagoon

We've written quite a bit about the Creature From the Black Lagoon remake in development over the last year or so. However, Hero Complex is now reporting that director Breck Eisner (who is finishing up his Crazies remake) has been replaced by Carl Rinsch, the commercials director who was originally thought to be directing the Alien prequel then got hired to take on 47 Ronin instead. It looks like once Rinsch is done with 47 Ronin sometime late next year, he'll get to work on this Creature From the Black Lagoon remake. The studio is supposedly going "back to the drawing board" this time and throwing out any old screenplays.

2010 Golden Globe Awards Nominees - Up in the Air Leads

Golden Globe Awards

The nominations for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards, the precursor to the Academy Awards, have just been announced today. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees this morning live from The Beverly Hilton. Up in the Air leads this year with six individual nominations. This is one of the first years that I nearly 100% agree with all of these nominations (normally I don't even care for them). My favorite films like Avatar and Inglourious Basterds get a lot of love, as do Up in the Air and 500 Days of Summer. There's even a Where the Wild Things nomination in here as well. Check out the full list!

Thor Writers Taking on Futuristic Vampire Flick Damn Nation

Damn Nation

As books, television and movies are increasingly inundated with insulting excuses for vampires, the only light at the end of the tunnel is the January release of Daybreakers. However, it looks like vampires might get a redemption as THR's Heat Vision reports that Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (who recently wrote Thor for Marvel) have signed on to adapt Damn Nation, a Dark Horse comic book which tells a story of the survivors of an attack from "inhuman nocturnal predators." The action takes place after an evacuation of the US as the government has relocated to London while scientists search for a solution.

Kenny Ortega Will Spend Some Time Grooving 'In the Heights'

In the Heights

Back in October director and choreographer Kenny Ortega vacated the director's chair for Paramount's musical revamp of Footloose. But it seems like that'll hardly be a disappointment for Ortega who has filled the open spot on his schedule with a project he considers a dream job. Variety reports Ortega has signed on to direct In the Heights, an adaptation of the acclaimed musical about a bodega owner who inherits his grandfather's lottery winnings and plots his retirement to a Dominican Republic beach. As he bids farewell to his customers on the block in New York, he becomes conflicted about leaving behind his surrogate family.

First Official Trailer for Ridley Scott's Robin Hood is Online!

Robin Hood Trailer!

This may be the first huge delightful surprise this month. Universal has just debuted the first international trailer for Ridley Scott's Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett (via ComingSoon). I'm not sure why I wasn't expecting much at the start, but man does this trailer kick some ass! It takes a little bit of time to get going, so give it a minute, but once it kicks in you'll be hyped for this thing until the end. I'm really glad to see Ridley Scott pumping up the Robin Hood fairytale with some grit and grime like this. It does look a little bit like Gladiator, but in the good epic way, not the deja vu way. Anyway, check this out!

Poster for Adam Green's Stuck-on-a-Ski-Lift Thriller 'Frozen'

Frozen Poster

If you scanned the Sundance 2010 line-up you may have noticed this thriller which is premiering in the Park City at Midnight section next January. I first found out about Frozen in the comments of the last one-room thrillers we featured a trailer for - Exam. Instead of being stuck in one room, though, this time three people are stuck on a chairlift. If you've ever been skiing and been on a chairlift, well, you know that you can't really move or do anything at all. It's the perfect place to set a horror movie like this. And according to some early reviews, Frozen is actually pretty damn good. ShockTillYouDrop has debuted the official poster for Frozen.

The Muppet Man is a Good Script, But Will It Ever Get Made?

Jim Henson

Just last week the 2009 Black List was officially unveiled, and at the top of the list was a script called The Muppet Man, a biopic about Jim Henson. Some 47 different producers and execs around Hollywood chose it as one of their favorite screenplays of 2009 and apparently it's an amazing script (according to others like Brendon Connelly of SlashFilm). But will it ever get made? Since the Black List was announced, two articles have popped addressing this issue - the first one in the LA Times, the second one on SlashFilm. There's an interesting story behind how writer Christopher Weekes wrote the script and what it specifically contains.

Russell Crowe & Cate Blanchett in Official Robin Hood Photos

Russell Crowe & Cate Blanchett in Robin Hood

Although we've seen plenty of photos from Robin Hood already, these four below (and one above) are the first officially released photos from Universal. Australia's Courier-Mail has the first exclusive look at Robin Hood with a small batch featuring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian (whom we haven't seen before). She definitely has the long, flowing dark red hair that Maid Marian is known for. The second photo shows Robin Hood and his Merry Men, made up of Kevin Durand, Scott Grimes, and Alan Doyle. The fourth photo at the end looks like some crazy scene reminiscent of Gladiator. Check out all of 'em below!
