Indie Trailer Sunday: Marko Zaror Stars in Chilean Film Mandrill

Mandrill Trailer

Cooler than Shaft, Hotter than Bond, Faster than Lee! Mandrill is a Chilean action film that I first saw at Fantastic Fest a few months ago (read my review). It's an awesome James Bond-like action movie but made on a shoestring budget with a badass Chilean action star named Marko Zaror. If you've seen Mirageman then you probably know who he is. But if not, this trailer will give you one hell of an introduction. He does all of his own stunts (which you'll see a lot of in the second half of this) and is very entertaining to watch. This trailer comes from our friends at Twitch (via SlashFilm) and includes English subtitles. Check it out!

First Look: Duplass Brothers' Newest Sundance Film 'Cyrus'

Duplass Brothers First Look

When it was first announced that this film would be premiering at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival, it was called the Untitled Duplass Brothers Project. Now it has an official title, Cyrus, and we have the first official photo from it. Cyrus stars Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, John C. Reilly, and Catherine Keener. It's about a recently divorced guy (Reilly) who meets the woman of his dreams (Tomei). Then he meets her son (Hill) who is well... interesting. It's another mumblecore comedy from the Duplass Brothers but apparently a little more mainstream than we've seen them before, especially because it was developed by Fox Searchlight.

Guillermo Addresses Hobbit Concerns, Nothing to Worry About

Guillermo del Toro / The Hobbit

Another update on The Hobbit? Yes, but this time the update comes from Guillermo del Toro himself on TheOneRing.net. The head honcho addressed some issues that have popped up recently regarding The Hobbit. He first talks about certain actors returning, only because some have said that Andy Serkis might not be back (don't worry, he will be). He also addresses the greenlight concern that we actually wrote about as well. Peter Jackson said recently that they don't have a greenlight (from New Line Cinema yet) and del Toro explains why that's not really as big of an issue as we're making it out to be. There's more, so read on!

Must Watch: Jacques Audiard's A Prophet Official US Trailer

A Prophet Trailer

Sony Pictures Classics has finally debuted the official US trailer for Jacques Audiard's A Prophet, better known as Un Prophete in French, on Apple. This film is, hands down, my favorite foreign film of 2009. Watching this trailer reminds me how phenomenal it is and makes me wish I could see it again this week. I've already seen it a few times (at different festivals) and it's such an phenomenal film. I've described it to others as a modern day version of Scarface but set in a French prison about a young illiterate inmate's rise to power. There's so much more than that, though, so take my word for it and start by watching this trailer.

The Black List 2009: The Most Popular Unproduced Screenplays

The Black List

The Black List for 2009 has finally been unveiled today, courtesy of both EW and Deadline Hollywood. This list is "compiled every year from the suggestions of 311 film executives, each contributes the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2009 and will not be released in theaters during this calendar year." Scripts had to receive at least five mentions to be included on the Black List. I've highlighted the top 10 (or rather, top 11) below, but the full list contains 97 scripts in total. You can find more info on the official website, blcklst.com, or read on for the top scripts.

Sound Off: Clint Eastwood's Invictus - What Did You Think?

Invictus

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Actor-turned-director Clint Eastwood is back with his newest film since Gran Torino last year titled Invictus starring Morgan Freeman as former South African President Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as rugby player Francois Pienaar. But how does it compare to Eastwood's last few films? Is it even entertaining to watch or is it just plain boring? Are the performances Oscar worthy or just mediocre? Is the story riveting and inspiring or just lackluster and void of heart? If you've seen it already, then sound off, leave a comment, and let us know what you thought of Invictus!

Ali Larter Might Join the Cast of Matthew Gratzner's UFO Movie

Ali Larter

A couple of weeks ago it was announced that Joshua Jackson would be starring in Matthew Gratzner's big screen adaptation of UFO, originally a 70's British sci-fi television series. Gratzner revealed to Forbidden Planet that Ali Larter is being considered for the lead female role. “For the character of Virginia Lake we've talked to Ali Larter, who's very interested." Gratzner told them. "I've actually met with her, and I think she would be a great addition to the picture. Lake is very strong and obviously also very feminine, and Ali Larter definitely encompasses that.” Larter recently appeared in Resident Evil: Extinction and Obsessed last year.

Watch This: Second Intense Trailer for The Crazies Remake

The Crazies Trailer

Overture Films has debuted a second new trailer for The Crazies remake (via Yahoo) that stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson, Danielle Panabaker, and a town full of crazy people. We ran the first trailer for this back in October and I know a lot of people (including Brandon) thought it looked pretty awesome. This second one jumps into things right away and it actually looks pretty damn good as well. This new trailer plays more like a serial killer movie than a crazy thriller, but it's still cool. I love how intense it gets, I've got a feeling I'm going to really like it, but I don't know yet. Anyway, check out this new trailer!

Summit Bringing Roman Polanski's Film The Ghost to the US

The Ghost

We haven't been following all the latest regarding Roman Polanski's arrest, but as was promised, his new film The Ghost is still being released (even though he's in jail). Summit Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing The Ghost in the US with the title The Ghost Writer instead sometime in the first half of 2010. The film is already scheduled for release in France in March of 2010. Polanski was arrested in Switzerland in September, but Gaumont co-chair Jerome Seydoux stated that it would get finished with or without him. The film is already entirely shot, it just needed a few more months of post-production work.

Sigourney Weaver Leaks Some Big Ghostbusters 3 Plot Points

Sigourney Weaver

But just because she's Sigourney Weaver, that's okay! Well, not really, but who cares? Weaver did an interview with Channel 4 News in the UK (via AICN) for Avatar and ended up chatting a bit about what's going on with Ghostbusters 3, which we haven't heard much about recently. There used to be new quotes from someone hitting every week for the last six months, but that finally stopped. Anyway, Weaver reveals a lot without saying much. "I'm afraid to say [Ghostbusters 3] is happening, I hope people are excited about that." I certainly am! But everyone else may change their mind after they hear what else she says about it.

Brandon's Word: Avatar is Truly Indistinguishable from Magic

Avatar Review

This review does NOT contain spoilers. "They don't make movies like this anymore." A friend of mine said that to me before the lights dimmed, before the reason we were all there in that theatre began. After Avatar arrives in theaters, quotes like the one above take on new significance. No longer can those words be said for the sole sake of irony. Or in jest. They may not make movies like this, like Avatar, often enough, but because of James Cameron -- because of the ten or so years he built Avatar with, because of his many, many years of experience he used as its foundation -- they do, indeed, make movies like this. And its title is Avatar.

New Iron Man 2 Viral Clue Only Points to Tony Stark So Far?

The Secret life of Mr. Stark

Yesterday a new poster for Iron Man 2 hit the web featuring Mickey Rourke as the villain Whiplash. The background of the poster contained newspaper clippings and magazine covers all about Tony Stark, used to give Rourke somewhat of a motive for this (although I'm not sure if that's the case in the movie). Anyway, following that debut, SuperHeroHype was sent what they called the first "clue" in a new Iron Man 2 viral game. The photo they were sent contains another newspaper clipping (just like the ones on the back of the poster), with the word "Secret" highlighted, and an arrow pointing to some text. But what does it all mean?
