Joe Penhall Adapting 'Butcher's Crossing' for Focus Features
The Road is a wonderful film not only because director John Hillcoat did a fantastic job of making it look bleak and beautiful, but also because Joe Penhall did a great job adapting Cormac McCarthy's novel. THR announces that Penhall will next adapt John Williams' 1960 Western novel Butcher’s Crossing for Focus Features. Before writing The Road, Penhall wrote the scripts for Some Voices and Enduring Love. Focus currently has a first-look deal with Sam Mendes, who might direct this project (pending Penhall's finished script, I'm sure). Mendes hasn't found a follow-up project to Away We Go and this has the potential to be it.

Sean Patrick Flanery Joins Sci-Fi Indie Project 'Scavengers'
Although Sean Patrick Flanery is best known for upholding truth and justice as one of the Boondock Saints, the actor will make the big leap into space as THR reports he and actress Louise Linton are joining the independent science fiction film Scavengers. The story follows crews of space scavengers competing for supplies, energy and treasure. When the crew of the Revelator, led by Emerson (Linton), comes across the alien-created Chaos Generator, they must fight to keep it out of the hands of her former shipmate, the sinister Captain Jekel (Flanery). Unfortunately this vaguely reminds me of the 1997 bomb Space Truckers.

Jennifer Aniston to Star With Adam Sandler in The Pretend Wife
I've narrowed my own "pretend wife" down to a short list of every attractive woman I see, but it sounds like Columbia Pictures is a little more specific in their selection as THR reports that Jennifer Aniston is set to play opposite Adam Sandler in the romantic comedy The Pretend Wife (formerly known as Holiday in Hawaii). Frequent Sandler collaborator, director Dennis Dugan (Happy Gilmore), is the frontrunner to helm this, but the Allan Loeb and Tim Dowling story is being kept under wraps. Initially I thought of a crazy plot involving an imaginary wife, but my bet is Aniston will merely pose as Sandler's wife for some reason.

Teen Romance and Football at the 'Heart' of Two New Films
Our teenage years are defined by reckless behavior, unrequited love, teen angst, and the majesty of high school making for memorable times, whether they were good or bad. Two upcoming projects aim to tackle teen troubles from two different ends of the spectrum as Variety reports Mandalay Pictures has optioned the rights to Elizabeth Eulberg's upcoming teen book The Lonely Hearts Club and THR says actor Lane Garrison (of Fox's "Prison Break") is writing One Heart, the true story of a football team from the Gainesville (Texas) State School that's made up of juvenile delinquents involved with drugs and violence.

Josh Brolin is Potentially Joining the Ranks of Men in Black 3
Just over a month ago we finally heard some official word on the long rumored Men in Black 3 as Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen was set to write the three-quel in Columbia's franchise. Now things are getting a little more interesting as Hero Complex reports that Josh Brolin is being considered to join the ranks of MiB, with a few possibilities for his role. Brolin will be playing either "a new single-monikered government agent, with Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K passing the baton to Brolin's character. Or he could play Agent K as a young man. Or something else entirely." The other good news is that Will Smith is expected to return.

Brandon's Word: Despite Saoirse Ronan, Lovely Bones is a Failure
Peter Jackson is a spectacular filmmaker. He can capture both intimate, quiet moments and sweeping, fantastical visions with ease. His directing always feels purposeful and thoughtful and measured, and Peter Jackson has proven that he's more than capable of adapting a popular novel for the screen. The above is an approximation of my thoughts before I stepped into the theatre to see Jackson's latest film, The Lovely Bones, a film based on Alice Sebold's breakout novel of the same name. Having seen The Lovely Bones, my opinion of Peter Jackson hasn't shifted as drastically as you may be expecting from that setup, he's still a

Joe Johnston's The Wolfman Gets an R Rating from the MPAA
Maybe there is at least one smart person working at Universal? SlashFilm is reporting that Joe Johnston's The Wolfman has received an R rating from the MPAA and that Universal is just going to stick with it. The movie was rated R for "bloody horror, violence and gore." Apparently Universal sent them an email bragging about the rating, as they're probably trying to twist their marketing campaign so that it focuses on how gory and intense it is (instead of playing to the PG-13 demographic). I wonder if any of the reshoots had anything to do with making this gorier than it originally was? Anyone have a feeling they initially wanted this PG-13?

First Look: Joel Schumacher's Coming-of-Age Drama 'Twelve'
I know most people shudder at the mere mention of Joel Schumacher's name, but supposedly he's trying something different this time around. Debuting at Sundance in January is Twelve, the newest film directed by Joel Schumacher. Although you probably didn't notice this, we featured the first sales art for Twelve back in May, as there was a huge billboard for it on display in Cannes. The film is set in New York's Upper East Side and is about a young drug dealer who watches as his high-rolling life is dismantled in the wake of his cousin's murder and his best friend's arrest for the crime. It features a cast of young up-and-coming actors.

Final Theatrical Poster for James Cameron's Avatar Unveiled
I'm not sure why this poster was unveiled only 10 days before Avatar hits theaters, but here it is anyway. IMPAwards got their hands on the final theatrical poster for Avatar (this one being an IMAX version) that I've personally seen on display at movie theaters. What you're looking at here is the final bit of imagery that will represent this film forever, as a failure or a success. It's a better poster than the original teaser which had only half of Zoe Saldana's Na'vi face. We finally get to see of Sam Worthington and also get an orange & blue color scheme, which I kind of like. Take a look at the final poster below. Are you ready for Avatar?

Rumor: Zombieland Writers Going from Undead to Deadpool?
Aside from comic book adaptations being seemingly endless these days, the subgenre has had some trouble introducing lesser known characters from the comics world to audiences without a traditional origin story. However, it seems Ryan Reynolds is becoming the key to comic book movies veering away from this tired and typical formula. First, Reynolds talked about Green Lantern's different approach to the origin story, and now it sounds like Reynolds' other comic book alter ego will have a different tone and style altogether as CHUD reports that Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick might be writing Deadpool.

Watch This: Test Footage from Dog Fighting Movie War Birds
I'm surprised this isn't directed by Michael Bay! I just stumbled across a 2-minute video of test footage for the movie War Birds. We just wrote about War Birds yesterday, as they've received the go ahead from TMU Pictures to head into production. It's about the underground culture of illegal, real-life aerial combat using "old school" dogfighting planes. I was expecting it to look cool, but this video (found on the official website) is hands down awesome - it gets pretty badass at about 40 seconds. I can't wait to see this turned in to a feature-length film. Watch this footage with the volume up and I guarantee you'll have a frickin' blast!
