Mel Gibson Shooting New Mystery Film in Veracruz, Mexico

Mel Gibson - Veracruz, Mexico Prison

Is everyone ready for another Mel Gibson-directed period movie? THR is reporting a very odd bit of news tonight. Apparently the governor of Veracruz, Mexico revealed that part of the Ignacio Allende prison will be emptied in January "because a grand production will be filmed there with our friend, the actor and producer Mel Gibson." This is apparently the first time this project has ever been mentioned publicly. Gibson visited the prison back in April of 2008 and part of Apocalypto was also shot in Veracruz back in 2005. While this isn't official, I'm guessing this means Gibson is preparing to direct another film soon. But what is it about?

Summit and Brad Pitt Bringing Young Dracula Back in 'Vlad'

Vlad the Impaler

Summit Entertainment wants even more vampire movies. The studio is developing a new "action-oriented" take on Dracula, currently in the form of a script written by actor Charlie Hunnam called Vlad. Brad Pitt is also producing the project with Dede Gardner through his Plan B Entertainment. They've also hired music video director and photographer Anthony Mandler to helm Vlad; this will be his feature directing debut. The story centers on Dracula as a young prince, when he was better known as Vlad the Impaler, the man behind the Dracula myth. Summit acquired this a while ago, but was developing it quietly until they found Mandler.

It's Time to Kick the Tires and Light the Fires with War Birds!

War Birds

Never since Top Gun has a film captured the pure adrenaline rush and intensity of fighter jet air combat. Sure sequences in films like Pearl Harbor and Independence Day have been fantastic in themselves, but an entire film has never come close to director Tony Scott's energy rush in the sky. That might all change as THR reports TMU Pictures is moving forward with a Michael Chait directed action-adventure film War Birds, the story of an Air Force veteran-turned-reckless airshow re-enactment pilot as he gets pulled into the underground culture of illegal, real-life aerial combat. It's like The Fast and the Furious but with jets!

Youth in Revolt Producer Developing 'Pictures of You' Next

Polaroid

Pun intended! Since Youth in Revolt has been in the can for some time now and is awaiting its release early next year, producer David Permut has had plenty of time to develop his next project which Variety reports will be the Josh Friedlander written Pictures of You. The romantic comedy revolves around a teenage boy who finds a lost camera on the beach. After developing the film, he ends up on a quest to find the girl of his dreams, whose picture was discovered inside the camera. And while the story already sounds cheesy as hell, I foolishly hope the filmmakers can resist the urge to include the awful song of the same name in the film.

Re-Imagining of The Nutcracker To Be Chock Full of Action

Nutcracker

That's right, folks. THR reports that The Nutracker, the Christmas story best known as a ballet with music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, is being re-made and revamped to take on the form of an action-adventure a la the same tone and style of the recent incarnation of The Chronicles of Narnia. And while this seems like the most ridiculous idea you've ever heard (and believe me, I'm right there with you), remember that the actual story was written by E.T.A. Hoffmann decades before the ballet's debut in 1892 and features a war involving a seven-headed Mouse King and his army of mice, curses and themes of ugliness and beauty. So there's that.

Creature Designer Neville Page on Creating Avatar's Banshees

A Banshee From Avatar

We're down to the last few weeks before James Cameron's Avatar arrives in theaters everywhere. I'm seeing it later this week and I'm sure early reviews will start hitting around then as well. But before we get into that, I wanted to feature this great interview that Hero Complex did with creature designer Neville Page. You may not recognize him yet, but Page is a engineer / artist / designer who has worked previously on Cloverfield, Watchmen, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, James Cameron's Avatar, and Tron Legacy. He's the guy responsible for designing the creatures, worlds, and vehicles in pretty much all of those films. Read on!

McG Thinks He's Still Directing Two More Terminator Movies?

McG

If you haven't heard this yet, the entire Terminator franchise is being sold off by the Halcyon Company sometime in the next few months. Deadline Hollywood published this statement from Halcyon: "Over the past few weeks Halcyon and its professionals have engaged in in-depth discussions and negotiations with numerous serious potential buyers, including several major movie studios." Despite this pending sale, Terminator Salvation director McG thinks he's still directing the fifth and sixth Terminator movies. McG recently participated in a Blu-Ray Live commentary and Gizmodo (via ComingSoon) liveblogged all of it.

First Early Teaser for Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Teaser

I've decided to forgo a new Indie Trailer Sunday today in order to feature this brand new teaser for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. The DVD and Blu-Ray of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince hits shelves on Tuesday this week, and found on that DVD was this special early look at the next movie in the series. As always, I get chills watching this kind of stuff just because I love this series and I'm already getting excited about this next one (even though it's not due out for another 11 months). The first half of this video is a brief introduction and then it goes into the teaser trailer about at the halfway point.

Peter Jackson Confirms The Hobbit Will Still Be Out in 2011

The Hobbit

Phew! Nearly a week ago, a news story starting spreading quickly around the web about The Hobbit. In it, producer Peter Jackson had been quoted as saying that they had to push back the start of filming from April to June of next year. While we didn't make this claim, other sites started reporting that the movie had been delayed and that it wouldn't be able to make its 2011 release date because shooting would take so long. Well, not according to Jackson himself. Collider talked with PJ at a recent press event for The Lovely Bones and confirmed that it's still on target for a December, 2011 release. So don't get worried about a delay yet.

Capote's Bennett Miller Lands the Moneyball Directing Gig

Bennett Miller

The latest update in the on-going Moneyball chronicles. Columbia Pictures kicked Steven Soderbergh off the project back in June. Then they hired Aaron Sorkin to rewrite Steve Zaillian's screenplay, which is based on Michael Lewis' non-fiction book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. Then we learned back in November that they were now looking at either bringing on 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb or Capote director Bennett Miller to replace Soderbergh on the film. The studio has finally confirmed today that it's Bennett Miller who landed the job. Or at least he's officially "in negotiations" to direct Moneyball.

Flying 'Up in the Air' with Anna Kendrick & American Airlines

Up in the Air

Starting today, Jason Reitman's Up in the Air is now playing in limited theaters. It'll expand nationwide on Christmas Day, so if you haven't seen it yet, be sure to see it then. A few weeks back, Paramount invited me on a special flight hosted by American Airlines in promotion of the film. Not only was it a private flight with American, but we would see the film on the plane (my third time seeing it), interview Anna Kendrick, and get a live performance from Sad Brad, who's song "Help Yourself" can be heard in the second half of the film. It was one of the best flying experiences I've ever had and one of the coolest trips I've ever been on!

Chris Rock's Death at a Funeral Urban Remake Trailer Debut

Death at a Funeral Trailer

Okay, I'm admittedly a little bias. Death at a Funeral, the original Frank Oz version, is one of my favorite comedies. I was one of the first people to see it at its world premiere and supported it all the way through its release. Somehow, Chris Rock got his hands on the remake rights, and in no time whipped out a terrible remake. So here we have the "urban" version of Death at a Funeral starring Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, Danny Glover, James Marsden, Luke Wilson, and the beautiful Zoe Saldana. The only funny part about this is that they re-used Peter Dinklage, who starred in the original, in the same exact role again.
