Our Complete Official 2009 Christmas Weekend Movie Guide

Christmas Weekend Movie Guide

Following the success of our Thanksgiving Movie Guide, Marco has put together another new movie guide for Christmas. So here it is, our very first Christmas Weekend Movie Guide. Marco has seen almost everything out there, and while you may not always agree with him, he provides the best review he can to make it just a little bit easier for you to choose a movie. We've included 10 films in this guide, and if there's one that's missing, it's probably in our Thanksgiving Guide, since some of those movies are still playing in theaters today. If you're struggling to figure out what to see this weekend, then look no further. Read on!

Official US Trailer for Chinese Epic The Warlords with Jet Li

The Warlords Trailer

What was on your Christmas list? How about an ancient Chinese epic movie called The Warlords starring Jet Li? I'm not sure why, but Magnolia Pictures just debuted the official US trailer for The Warlords, which is a part of their Six Shooter Film Series V2, on Christmas Eve tonight (on Apple). Despite their odd timing, this is actually a badass trailer. Set in the midst of war and political upheaval during the Taiping Rebellion of the 1860s, The Warlords stars Jet Li as General Pang, who barely survives a brutal massacre of his fellow soldiers by playing dead, and joins a band of bandits led by Er Hu and Wu Yang. Watch and enjoy below!

An Elementary Chat with Sherlock Holmes Director Guy Ritchie

Guy Ritchie

Just last week I caught up with Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie for a chat on the phone since he was in London (and I live in LA). I've interviewed him once before (for RocknRolla in Toronto), so I knew what to expect, but it's still always crazy interviewing Guy Ritchie. At one point, he started interviewing me, asking me questions. You don't expect that when you're interviewing a big director, but it's all good fun. Best of all, I loved Sherlock Holmes and I'm a huge fan of his movies, so I was still excited to chat with him and made sure I got in every question I wanted to ask. So without further ado, read on for my interview!

Follow the Characters in the Home Alone Project on Twitter

Home Alone

Now this is pretty unique idea. One of my all-time favorite Christmas movies is, without a doubt, Home Alone, the 1990 Macaulay Culkin classic. I've seen it enough times to know exactly what happens when and how it all plays out, but it's still a great movie. Apparently someone else wanted to take their knowledge and love of Home Alone to the next level as they've started up the "Home Alone Project" on Twitter. They've created fake Twitter accounts for some 19 characters in the movie, from Kevin McCallister to his big brother Buzz to Old Man Marley, and are tweeting things just like if everything was actually happening in real life.

What's Next for Avatar and James Cameron: Sequels & More!

James Cameron's Avatar

Now that James Cameron's Avatar has been out in theaters for nearly a week, it's time to look at what's next for James Cameron. And what's next for Avatar. What will we see in sequels? What will Cameron direct next? Back when Iron Man came out in '08, I wrote up a similar article looking at what's next. I loved that movie so much when I saw it that I was already anxious to see the sequel, so I pulled together some quotes and ideas and wrote up "The Future of Iron Man" (we even mentioned War Machine). With Avatar, though, there's so much more that everyone wants to hear about after seeing it. Where can they even go in a sequel?

Robin Hood Might Go 3D, Too? Will 2010 Be the Year of 3D?

Robin Hood in 3D

Okay, I know that 3D has been around since 1890, so it's already had plenty of time to shine, and 2010 probably won't be different than any other year before it. Or will it? This is the second rumor we've heard in the last week about a major movie being converted to 3D (the other one was Clash of the Titans). Might the success of Avatar have something to do with it? And more importantly, were the studio execs really waiting to see if Avatar would fail (because of its 3D) before deciding to jump on the bandwagon and convert all of their event movies to 3D, too? Sorry for so many damn questions, but there's a lot on my mind right now!

Kevin Smith Explains How 'A Couple of Dicks' Became 'Cop Out'

Cop Out Logo

The trailer for Kevin Smith's new comedy Cop Out with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan just hit last night. The title of the original script was A Couple of Dicks, which is clever, but sadly too offensive for some. At one point it almost became A Couple of Cops, but the trailer confirms that it's officially Cop Out now, which is a "cop out" of its own. Anyway, Kevin Smith spoke with Entertainment Weekly and gave them the lowdown on the name change, including why it happened and other alternatives. "Look, losing A Couple of Dicks was almost akin to losing my own dick. It was a perfect buddy-cop movie comedy title. Everyone knew it."

Disney's Philip K. Dick Animated CG Movie Has Been Shelved?

King of the Elves

Back in April of 2008, Disney revealed their line-up of animated movies through 2012. One of them listed for release at Christmas in 2012 (three full years from now) was a project called King of the Elves based on Philip K. Dick's short story. Disney hired Brother Bear co-directors Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker to direct this and we thought it was moving along smoothly. However, SlashFilm is reporting that Disney has "permanently shelved" King of the Elves, meaning we'll never see it. In fact, word from inside Disney is that no one's sure when we'll see another CG animated movie (which this would've been) instead of hand-drawn.

That Live-Action Tekken Movie Finally Gets an Official Poster

Tekken

Tekken, as in the video game? Yep, I'm talking about the platform fighting game Tekken. You may or may not know, but Namco has been working on a Tekken movie for a while (we ran some photos in February). In fact, the whole thing is shot and in the can, just waiting to be released. Luke Goss stars as Steve Fox, Jon Foo stars as Jin Kazama, and it's directed by Dwight H. Little (Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid). It's either a cult classic in the making or a huge piece of crap just like the Dragonball and Street Fighter movies from this year. Twitch just found the first official Japanese poster on the official website. Check it!

Must Watch: First Official Trailer for Kevin Smith's Cop Out!

Cop Out Trailer

Warner Bros has debuted the trailer for Kevin Smith's Cop Out, formerly known as A Couple of Dicks, over on Apple in glorious high def. This new comedy stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as two New York City cops whose adventures include locating a stolen baseball card, rescuing a woman, and dealing with gangsters and their laundered money. Hot damn this look hilarious. I've been excited for it ever since we posted that photo of Tracy Morgan in a cellphone costume being chased by a dog. And hell yes, this trailer delivers! I love the way it starts out, what a perfect way to draw people in. Can't frickin' wait to see this!

Another Phenomenal New Retrospective Video: Cinema 2009

Cinema 2009

Ah yes, the 2009 retrospectives are starting to hit. Kees van Dijkhuizen has created his own Cinema 2009 video featuring glorious high definition footage and some incredible music. This is a vast improvement over the one we featured last week, but I'm still waiting for the retrospective video from oyguvaltshappy, who was the one that started it all back in 2007. The title of this new one is 1 Year, 342 Movies, 12 Months of Production, 7 Minutes. I love this video quite a bit because I love what Kees does with the editing and the speeding-up and music and dialogue and slow-mo. Sorry for going crazy, but this really is wonderful. Enjoy!

What are the Most Demand Sequels for Movies from 2009?

The Hangover

I just received an email from MovieTickets.com with some interesting data that's worth sharing with all of you solely for the sake of discussion. They recently polled over 32,000 people who were purchasing tickets on the website and asked them: "which movie without an existing film franchise they'd like to see turned into a sequel." Essentially, they were asked what movie from 2009 do they want to a sequel for the most. I don't know what all the choices were, but the results will probably shock you. Then again, I have a feeling this is the demographic that sites like this cater to, so maybe it's not so surprising after all. Take a look.
