Warner Brothers Pays Big for Steve Carell Driven Family Drama

Steve Carell

With relatively sparse purchases being made from the spec script market in 2009, it's interesting to see that what could actually be the biggest spec script sale of the year occurred so very late in the game as Variety reports that a still untitled script by Dan Fogelman (Cars, Fred Claus, Bolt) that was written as a dramatic vehicle for Steve Carell has been picked up by Warner Bros. in a deal worth nearly $2 million. Similar to that of the Alan Rickman/Emma Thompson portions of Love Actually, the story has Carell as a father whose life unravels while he deals with a marital crisis and tries to manage his relationship with his children.

Metacritic's Best Reviewed Movie of the Decade: Pan's Labyrinth

Pan's Labyrinth

Surprised? Well, this is Metacritic, a site similar to Rotten Tomatoes that compiles reviews from the top critics, so it's not just someone picking their own favorites films. "Our film staff has been collecting reviews for each week’s new theatrical releases since the fall of 1999, and, as a result, we have a nearly complete database of films from the past decade: certainly every major release from 2000-09, and virtually all minor releases, including obscure titles that barely made an appearance on the big screen." They then ranked every film ever reviewed by their Metacritic score and Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth ended up on top.

Paramount Picks Up a Doc Holliday Action Adventure Script

gunfight

Not a fan of westerns? Paramount wants to change your mind. The studio has acquired (via Variety) Chad St. John's spec script The Further Adventures of Doc Holliday in hopes of turning it into a western style tentpole action adventure movie. As in, a big budget, western "event" movie. Another one of Chad St. John's scripts ended up on this year's Black List in the #10 spot. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, of Transformers and G.I. Joe, is producing the project, which is described as a history-based adventure tale in the vein of Pirates of the Caribbean. Can you imagine seeing epic old western gunfights on an epic scale? Oh hell yes!

Laurence Fishburne Joins the Cast of Fox's Predators Reboot

Laurence Fishburne

Another fine actor has joined the cast of Robert Rodriguez' reboot of Predators being directed by Nimród Antal as we speak. Collider reports that Laurence Fishburne will star alongside of Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Alice Braga, Derek Mears, and Walton Goggins. Fishburne is playing a character named Noland, but that's all we know. I'm not sure why Fishburne wasn't included in the first batch of actors that were announced. I'm guessing it means he's either only in it for a cameo or a special, important role of some kind. Either way, this is awesome news. I was already excited for this movie, but I'm even more hyped now.

After Years of Waiting, Avatar is Finally Here, Are You Ready?

Avatar

Avatar is "the most evocative and amazing science-fiction movie since Star Wars." At least that's what Steven Spielberg said after seeing it. I was thinking of what to write about tonight, on the eve of the grand debut of James Cameron's Avatar, before everyone around the world has the chance to see it, but there's so much out there it's hard to pick and choose. But there are a few thoughts and questions still on my mind right now. Will it change movies forever? Will it even be a success? One thing I know for certain though, is that most people will love it. Not everyone, but almost everyone who has seen it so far has been blown away.

Another New Trailer: Butler & Aniston in The Bounty Hunter

The Bounty Hunter Trailer

I don't know why, but I have a feeling Jennifer Aniston is going to play the ex-girlfriend in every romantic comedy from now until whenever her career ends (hopefully soon). With that said, here's the first trailer for The Bounty Hunter, a new romantic comedy action adventure whatever-the-hell-you-want-to-call-it that also stars Gerard Butler as a bounty hunter who comes to arrest Aniston (oh what a concept!). I'm not going to say this looks terrible, I just think it looks very typical, too much like every other romantic comedy action movie that Hollywood puts out. If you're into this kind of stuff, enjoy, and if not, try and enjoy it anyway.

New Writer Hired for X-Men: First Class, Singer is Returning

X-Men: First Class

Yesterday night, Bryan Singer announced on the "blue carpet" at the Avatar premiere that he would be directing X-Men: First Class, the next movie in Fox's X-Men franchise. Just in case you didn't believe it, Heat Vision has confirmed that Singer is officially directing the spin-off/prequel. They also report that Fox has hired Jamie Moss (Street Kings) to rewrite the script and work with Singer on developing the project. Oh and they also mention that "new characters will also be created," as in they're going to create some new mutants that haven't been seen in the comics. Fox has made some smart choices, so maybe there's hope?

Rumor: Spider-Man 4 on 'Indefinite Hold' Due to Villain Issues?

Spider-Man

This is only a rumor and I'm writing about it purely for the sake of discussion. IESB claims they've heard from an "inside source" that Spider-Man 4, or Spider-M4n as it's currently being referred to at the studio, was put on "indefinite hold" due to arguments over the villain between Sony execs and Sam Raimi. While IESB says that some department heads working on SM4 were notified of this halt last week, SuperHeroHype says they contacted Sony who told them that they "are simply on hiatus for the holidays and production will resume in the new year." So who do you believe? Or is there some truth to both stories? Read on for more!

Rene Russo Also Joins the Epic Cast of Kenneth Branagh's Thor

Rene Russo

I'd be lying if I said that my interest in Marvel Entertainment's Thor has completely turned around all the way from little-to-none up to great anticipation. While I attribute most of my excitement to seeing how a director like Kenneth Branagh handles a big superhero movie, it's also because of the ever increasingly impressive casting announcements, including Anthony Hopkins being cast as Thor's father Odin. Now it looks like Odin has his wife as Variety reports Rene Russo has signed on to play Frigga, the queen of Asgard who is also not only the mother of the hammer-wielding Thor, but his mischievous nemesis Loki.

DreamWorks & Steven Spielberg Adapting 'War Horse' Novel

War Horse

The newly independent DreamWorks is developing an adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's 1982 novel War Horse. Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Revel Guest are producing. British writer Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, The Wind in the Willows) will write the screenplay. The book tells the epic tale of a friendship between a boy and his horse, who become separated but continue to be intertwined as they try to survive the horrors of World War I. War Horse was also recently adapted for the stage, with UK runs at the National Theatre and New London Theatre. I'm sure it's a great story, but does anyone want to see this?

Watch This: First Official Shrek Forever After Teaser Trailer

Shrek Forever After Teaser

DreamWorks Animation has debuted the first teaser trailer for Shrek Forever After on Apple. With the highly anticipated opening of Avatar this weekend, every studio is releasing every last trailer they've got, especially for any 3D movies. The premise in this one asks what would Far Far Away be like if Shrek never existed? It looks okay, but I'm tired of this franchise. The huge voice cast for Shrek Forever After includes Cameron Diaz, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas, Julie Andrews, Amy Poehler, John Lithgow, Maya Rudolph, Amy Sedaris, Eric Idle, Larry King, and Regis Philbin. Watch and tell us what you think?

Hit-Girl Makes Her Debut on One Final Kick-Ass Teaser Poster

Hit-Girl

When it was first announced more than a year ago that the adorable 12-year-old Chloe Moretz would be starring in Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass adaptation as Hit-Girl, I don't think anyone expected her to be this badass. But if you've seen the Comic-Con footage or the first trailer, you already know she's going to be the past damn part of this movie. IGN has debuted the final character poster for Kick-Ass featuring Hit-Girl and another fun catchphrase. I'm so frickin' excited to see this movie right now, I wish we didn't have to wait another four months, but I'm sure it'll be here before we know it. And oh yes, she does use those swords!
