Avatar Day is August 21st - 15 Minutes in Theaters for Free! Updated!

At the very highly anticipated presentation for James Cameron's Avatar this afternoon at Comic-Con, the master filmmaker himself announced an unprecedented marketing campaign unlike anything you've ever seen before - which is just like what you'll see on the screen that very day. On August 21st, Fox will take over "as many" IMAX 3D and digital 3D theaters as they can and screen 15 minutes from Avatar for free to whoever wants to see it. He's been waiting to show the world what this looks like and this is the perfect way to introduce everyone to Pandora. Having just seen footage, I can assure you, you won't want to miss this!

For those who were lucky enough to get into Hall H today in San Diego, they were treated to roughly 25 minutes of select scenes from Avatar. It started out with an introduction to Sam Worthington as Jake and then an introduction to what we'll be seeing for the remainder of the movie - his Avatar body. The bodies are actual biological beings and Jake's mind becomes a part of theirs and he, essentially, becomes this animal. These Na'vi are 10 foot tall creatures who are a pale blue color yet glow at night. This is the kind of footage you'll see on August 21st and this is the truly only way to get immersed into Cameron's amazing new world.

Update: Fox posted a full press release regarding this announcement and included a few more details. The official trailer will also arrive (online) on August 21st as part of this big promotion. "The worldwide trailer launch will be presented in all formats, including IMAX 3-D, IMAX 2-D, digital 3-D, digital 2-D, and 35mm 2-D. The trailer will also be available online. The extended (15 minute) look at Avatar will unspool only on August 21 – and only in 3-D – in select theaters and IMAX. Details on locations and reserving tickets for this extraordinary and unprecedented experience will be announced soon." Stay tuned for more updates!

Interesting, so i just got to an Imax theater and watch it for free? Is it being tied into a film premiering on Imax??

Will the footage be screened only once at each IMAX theater on the 21st, or will they essentially loop the footage all day long, and make it a true "Avatar Day"?

I have been waiting for this movie for years reading about it looking it up and waiting for it, but im going to miss it because im going to prison. sometimes i hate how stupid i am lol. buying it on blue-ray just wont be the same as watching in imax 3-d. i could always escape for that day then return haha

Seriously alex details plz...will it be showing in front of another movie, is it just a stand alone 15 minutes then you leave the theater seriously I feel like your leaving us hanging. Even though you have to have some of the best coverage of comic con yet and thats deeply appreciated.

Yes, Avatar Day is no joke, its the day for all things Avatr The trailer has a global launch in all theatrical formats(Imax 2D/3D, Digital 2D/3D, regular 2D) as well as being available on the internet. Imax 3D and select Digital 3D theaters all over the world get the 15 minute preview...information on ticket reservations will be available soon Ubisoft will release the trailer for Avatar: The game, thats been in development almost as long as the film, on this day. Mattel will officially 'unveil' thier Avatar toy line. Prepare for AVATAR DAY

I know so any people who think Avatar is the same as The Last Airbender. I tell people to lookout for this movie and they'll say: "Oh that movie based on the cartoon series?" If Avatar is true to its hype its going to take a lot of people by suprise.

Thank goodness for Avatar Day. Thanks to the Twilight-ers I missed the footage. Got to see the Q/A but I wanted to see this so badly.
