Casting: Halle Berry in The Surrogate, Michael Shannon in Runaways

A few casting updates for Monday morning. Last week we announced that Paul Verhoeven would return to direct a thriller called The Surrogate for Fox. Set to star is Halle Berry, who hasn't been in anything since 2007 when she starred in Perfect Stranger and Things We Lost in the Fire. Berry would play the wife who wants to have the child in a story about a desperate couple who find themselves in an unbearable position when they discover that the surrogate they hired to carry their baby is insane. Additionally, Oscar nominated actor Michael Shannon has been cast as the lead in the the rock band film The Runaways.

The Runaways is a film about Joan Jett's seminal 1970s rock band of the same name. Kristen Stewart will play Jett and Dakota Fanning is on board to play bandmate Cherie Curry. Although the film centers on the four female members of the band, there are a number of key male roles representing people who were personally and professionally associated with them. Shannon will play infamous record producer/manager Kim Fowley, who founded the band. Music video director Floria Sigismondi (Marilyn Manson's The Beautiful People) will helm the project based on her own script. Production is set to begin this summer.
