Francis Lawrence May Direct 'In the Small' Before 'Sgt. Rock'
From one comic book to another. Pajiba is reporting that I Am Legend and Constantine director Francis Lawrence may end up directing an adaptation of a graphic novel called In the Small before he ends up directing the Sgt. Rock adaptation we wrote about a few weeks ago. They explain that Lawrence is attached to a lot of projects, but he doesn't have a "go project" yet, but if everything works out, he could be on In the Small, which is being produced by Akiva Goldsman. Apparently first-time writer Laura Harrington wrote a draft based on Michael Hague's graphic novel for Warner Bros. Sgt. Rock is in for rewrites, but this is ready.
In the Small is about a strange explosion that leaves all humans six inches tall, yet nothing else is affected. Those who survive the transition are forced to create a new social order and adjust in a world where man is no longer at the top of the food chain. As they attempt to find out what happened, humanity is faced with a new and existential threat (like giant bugs!). I hate to make this reference, but with all the miniature men in Night at the Museum, this sounds too similar. I just hope this version is dark and intense, not comedic like Museum. We'll let you know when we hear more about this or anything that Lawrence is attached to direct.

Because smaller properties are less expensive and less of a gamble and "test the waters" for bigger properties like The Flash etc. Idiots.

My sources tell me that Laura Harrington has written an incredible screenplay that is not at all cute like "Night at the Museum." The premise of the book is extended in the movie, and the disaster that results from the phenomenon (apparently caused by extraterrestrials) of the shrinkage of the human race is devastating. Hard to imagine my 3 pound dog being my predator - but it happens here. Planes crash because pilots cannot fly. Communication breaks down - everyone is too small to use them. Absolute anarchy ensues - and people we care about will die. I don't know about Sgt. Rock, etc...but "In the Small" will be very good and, unlike many of the big blockbusters, will leave you thinking about Darwinian principles in a new light.
