Geoffrey Rush Returning for 'On Stranger Tides' Next Year

We know that Disney is trying to move forward on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides by next year so that it'll be ready to hit theaters in 2011 (I think they're desperate for another big tentpole). As of this moment, we don't know whether or not Johnny Depp will be back (given his complaints about Dick Cook's departure). But one actor that will be returning is Geoffrey Rush, who played Captain Barbossa in the past three films. Rush told MTV that he needs to "keep his schedule open for a possible start to filming next spring." That seems accurate, but who knows if they'll get Rob Marshall on-board to direct that quickly.

Rush explained: "They're waiting for the screenplay writers to put together something that's beyond the trilogy, take it off into a new direction so that it's fresh and hopefully really interesting for an audience, that they're not going to just sausage-machine out something else, which wouldn't be so good." Although, Rush doesn't seem to be fully in the know. "No, no one tells me anything!" he admitted. "Jerry Bruckheimer—get your act together! Call me!" And while you're at it, give me a call, too, Bruckheimer! In all seriousness, Barbossa's return at the end of Dead Man's Chest was one of the most exciting parts - I'm glad he'll be back.

Johnny Depp is most definately going to be back as captain jack sparrow because if they are that serious about making pirates of the caribbean: on stranger tides, then they will most definately convince johnny depp to return, and the way that they'll get him to return, is paying him $56 million dollars!, which that was also announce to to long ago either!. There wont be a pirates of the caribbean: on stranger tides with out johnny depp!. And on top of that, geoffrey rish is returning as captain hector barbossa, thats like icing on the cake if they both return, which they both have to for the movie to even happen at all !!!.

Maybe if geoffrey rush is returning that means that johnny depp made a last minute thought about returning and decided to return after all, because with only geoffrey rush returning the movie still wouldn't be made with out johhny depp and thats just total common sense!. I bet jerry bruckheimer is giving him a raise in money to play captain jack sparrow, because of him being upset that dick cook is no longer with disney!.

If they do this, then they should do it without Bloom and Knightley. Their characters were put to rest at the end of the third film. The only way for Bloom to make an appearance would be in a possible cameo, with the Dutchman somehow coming to Sparrow's aid. Other than that, I don't see a need for those characters, to appear.

Dave, I agree with there 100% percent. Your absolutely right!. Will and elizabeth really don;t need to return it's not needed for them to return, because yeah!, their story was ended at the end of pirates of the caribbean: at world's end back in 2007 !.

Im all for Pirates 4, I unlike a lot of people have great faith in the franchise. I think Marshall will be able to give POTC a fresh new beginning. I really enjoyed POTC 2 & 3, but I think that we could use something different for a fourth.

@#9 You have absolutely no idea what your talking about, do you?!. No, they were not gonna make pirates 2 and 3 like that, because then the movies would of been too darn short to enjoy!.

They were too long...like Star Wars, they seriously dragged out the fighting scenes. Like many long movies, (aside from The Dark knight) Pirates is boring pretty much throughout. I can enjoy the beginning as it's the beginning but then it drags and drags and drags. I'm referring to 2 & 3 by the way. I would have been just as happy with one movie.

cannot wait to see Geoffrey Rush Back as Barbossa, hope that pirate's of the caribbean on stranger's tide's is better than pirate's 3 world's End. it was a big let down for me.

Love Rush. Doubtful it will be successful without a Depp though. He'd be a fool to turn that down though.

@#13, Bozo, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides wont happen with out Johnny Depp, thats why he's going to wait and read the script before going on to starring in Pirates of the caribbean: On Stranger Tides!. If he apprroves of it and likes it, then there will be one with him in it as Captain Jack Sparrow, if he does not like it and does not approve of it, to be in it, then there will not be a Pirates of the Caribbean: on Stranger Tides. So lets all hope that he reads the script and likes it enough to be able to return to a pirates 4 movie!.

It should be noted that MTV's article clearly indicates that the referenced interview took place BEFORE Cook's departure from Disney which negates the content of the interview.

Without Johnny Depp-no movie! No one else can play that part-it's totally his inspiration!! Without Johnny Depp it won't be worth seeing-but then I'm a Depp fan! I loved the first three movies but Johnny is who made it so good!

mlshook57, He will be in it after all for sure!, the movie website called cinemablend.com says in a new article that pirates of the caribbean: on stranger tides will be johnny depp's last pirates of the caribbean movie!. So after "On Stranger Tides" comes out!, don't expect to see another Pirates of the Caribbean movie with Johnny Depp starring in it as captain Jack Sparrow!. This upcoming pirates of the caribbean movie is going to be his last POTC movie!. Unfortunately pirates of the caribbean 5 and 6 are no longer going to ever happen at all !!!, which that i'm sorry to say is the sad and unfortunate truth! =(.

I dont understand how anyone could not understand Depp's interpretation of Sparrow. There should be no question about this: No Depp no Sparrow.. and no part 4 either, no matter how cool Rush does the Barbossa job. Hope they write a good enough script to have JD interested. I love Pirates of Caribbean, I just love the whole thing. Will miss Davy Jones in part 4, liked the thing how he put all the emotion in that amazing tentacle face. Love the boots and the rings of Sparrow. Keep the good work up..
