Great Voice Cast Potentials for Eric Powell's The Goon Movie
You might remember hearing (or seeing) some details about a movie based on Eric Powell's cult comic The Goon previously. The entire project is being spearheaded by David Fincher and is being animated by Blur Studios, but it hasn't gotten the greenlight, which I'm guessing means they still need extra funding. Well, since The Goon is a comic, they had a big presence at Comic-Con this weekend, including a panel earlier in the week. SlashFilm was there and got the scoop on a few new details straight from Eric Powell himself, including that Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti are interested in providing their voices for the movie.
Unfortunately, neither of them are officially signed on, because the movie hasn't actually started production. In fact, it still doesn't even have a director yet. But they were shown a few test scenes that Blur Studios had put together that included the voices of Brown and Giamatti. If you know nothing about this comic, well, here's the perfect way to introduce you to the tone of the whole thing. The first clip they were shown was a public service announcement from the Goon, who explained how to deal with a zombie: "Pick up a hammer or a large wrench, maybe a rusty mailbox and... bash the fucker's head in!" Yes this will be at least PG-13.
Actually, it's not that they don't have a director, they just can't announce him yet ("he said he's not allowed to say right now"). In regards to specific characters, Clancy Brown would voice the lead character the Goon, and Paul Giamatti would voice his sidekick Franky (the little guy to the right above). SlashFilm's Russ Fischer doesn't mention anything else about the status of the project or whether it'll end up going into production soon. But from the footage they showed and the early test shots we posted in March as well as the potential casting of Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti, this is something I want to see as soon as possible.
