Gus Van Sant Directing a 'Young Love' Film Titled Restless

Gus Van Sant

Columbia is negotiating with Oscar nominated filmmaker Gus Van Sant to develop and direct Restless, an original screenplay by first-time screenwriter Jason Lew. Exact story details are being kept under wraps, though it's described as contemporary and distinctive take on young love. Brian Grazer will produce Restless along with Ron Howard and his daughter Bryce Dallas Howard for Imagine Entertainment. Lew and Bryce attended New York University together, which is where Lew first wrote the story as a play. Howard, who had acted in plays with Lew, read the story and encouraged him to write it as a screenplay and take it to her dad.

Van Sant is pretty hit or miss with me. In regards to his two most recent films, Milk was incredible, but I hated Paranoid Park. He's certainly a very talented director but I think only when he has strong scripts, which may be why I loved Milk so much, as screenwriter Dustin Lance Black went on to win an Oscar for that script. According to THR, Imagine executives and Grazer and Howard really loved "Lew's perspective and originality" as well as the "raw emotion of the story." The intent is to shoot the movie in Oregon soon for around $15 million, which is where he shot Paranoid Park. I'll be keeping my eye on this as it develops.

GVS is really hit or miss for me also. hated garry, and paranoid park, but loved Milk and Good Will Hunting. Also, thought My Own Private Idaho was a very lame movie, while Elephant was okay. i'm still thinking that GVS is a terrable director though, even though he did Milk, he still did Gerry and PAranoid park, two of the worst films....
  • ^ Like I said, it's all about the screenplay... Hoping this is a good one!
  • Even though one of my best friends was in paranoid park(He was the only black kid) and i knew numerous other people in the film(such as that chick who asked the main kid if he wanted to see a movie,I watched fight club with her randomly in 8th grade and never talked to her again) and it was filmed in my town, i wasn't much of a fan of it. I actually was chosen for a part but couldn't do it cause i was in canada. In fact i hated it because it was to much of a joke when it came to skating and "paranoid park" which is Burnside and i guess being from Portland kind of makes you laugh at it when The main character says "im not ready for paranoid park". It wasn't the greatest film but Milk was amazing and i did like Elephant alot. I still like Gus though so hopefully this turns out good.
