Did you already forget that Chris Pine will be the new Jack Ryan? Because I did. Producer Mace Neufeld spoke this morning at a press conference for Invictus and gave a brief update on the next Jack Ryan project (via ComingSoon and Collider). First, he confirmed that Chris Pine was set to play Ryan, but that they were still waiting for a script and it was still very early on in development. Additionally, this will not be based on one of Tom Clancy's novels, but rather will be an original screenplay written by Adam Koxac (with an earlier draft by Hossein Amini). Neufeld wouldn't talk about the story, but did reveal one little tidbit about the plot.
"We pick him up when he's on Wall Street. But I'm not going to tell you the rest of the story... The Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They're kind of 'thinking man's thrillers.' Jack is referred to as a water-walker because of his ability to jump ahead to a conclusion. That's very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that's why we want to portray him. He's a teacher, he's a historian. He's a linguist and he's really smart."
Jack Ryan is a stock broker? I think they may be shaping this into more of a thriller than an action movie, which is fine by me, but there better at least be some action set pieces. Because no one wants to see Jack Ryan talking on the phone all day long. As for choosing Pine, Neufeld explained that Paramount simply wanted to reboot the franchise. "New management came into Paramount and they said, 'This is a really valuable franchise. Let's try to restart it with a younger actor.' The Chris Pine idea came up and hopefully that's what we'll be doing." So a Jack Ryan movie starring Chris Pine that's set on Wall Street? Are you in?
