Latest Venom Draft Turned In, Sony Still Moving Forward
Way back in July of last year, Sony announced that they were officially moving forward on a Venom spin-off. But like Fox, just because they're "moving forward" doesn't mean it will ever actually happen. We last heard in April that they had worked on a draft but really couldn't talk about it. SciFi Wire now has an update from writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick that, "we've written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they're pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward." Not exactly a huge update, but still an update, in a good way I suppose. But will Sony ever decide to make it? And who will they get to direct?
SciFi Wire next asked when they think it might go into production. But their answer to that was even more vague. "We're not sure, [but] we've turned in our two drafts," said Wernick. As writers of a huge comic book movie, they don't really have too much control. "Basically, the studio and Marvel and the Arads are taking our drafts and going beyond and figuring out what's the next step." At least this doesn't mean the project is being scrapped or shelved, for the time being, but with Spider-Man 4 actually moving forward for 2011, I don't know if Sony will also want a competing Venom project on their slate as well (or can even afford it).
This Venom project has kind of been in limbo ever since it was first announced more than a year ago. My hope is that Sony one day confirms a director and we can start pressing them for more information instead of the writers. Because at this point they don't have much more they can (or are allowed to) tell us besides that it's written and in the studio's hands. We'll let you know if we ever hear anything else! Thoughts?
