Mel Gibson has quite a bit on his plate! Yesterday it was announced that he would be directing Leonardo DiCaprio in a new Viking project that we all thought was the one he would be shooting down in Veracruz, Mexico. However, Variety reports it's another new project called How I Spent My Summer Vacation that Gibson will be starring in at a prison down in Mexico starting early next year. The film is about a career criminal who gets caught by Mexican authorities and is sent to a drug- and crime-filled prison, where he learns how to survive with the help of a 9-year-old boy. Gibson wrote the screenplay, but is not directing.
Instead, Gibson is letting his first assistant director from Apocalypto, Adrian Grunberg, take over directing duties on How I Spent My Summer Vacation. Stacy Perskie, who was previously second assistant director on Apocalypto, will be producing this along with Gibson. The filmmaker/actor has been quietly scouting locations in Mexico for nearly a year and will start shooting in March in San Diego and Veracruz, which is where they also shot Apocalypto. Gibson is then expected to move right into the DiCaprio Viking project in the fall of next year following Summer Vacation, which he will then be directing again (unlike this film).
I really like the sound of this. Basically a crazy criminal version of Mel Gibson gets sent to jail in Mexico and learns about life from a kid. How charming is that? I just think it has some potential to be pretty damn cool. I'm curious to see some photos from this. Will it be a period piece or set in modern times? Thoughts?
