Must Watch: Badass Trailer for Neo-Noir Sci-Fi Franklyn
Reality hasn't got a prayer. Franklyn is an awesome indie neo-noir sci-fi film that we've been following for more than a year now. We first debuted a very bootlegged trailer for it last October that has since been removed, but IGN has finally delivered the first official trailer today and it truly kicks some serious ass. This could be one of those incredible sci-fi films that unfortunately goes unnoticed and becomes a cult classic that every film geek loves. While I do still hope that it becomes a hit, I've got a feeling it's probably going to stay off the radar. All I know is that this kind of looks like the next phenomenal V for Vendetta. Thoughts?
Watch the badass trailer for Franklyn:
The film is a split narrative set both in contemporary London and in a future metropolis ruled by religious fervor. It's the story of four lost souls, divided by two parallel worlds, on course for an explosive collision.
Franklyn is written and directed by Gerald McMorrow, who is making his directorial debut after writing & directing a sci-fi short in 2002 called Thespian X. The film already premiered at the London Film Festival last year, but doesn't have a US distributor yet. Hopefully it will find one soon, because it's already due out in theaters in England soon. Stay tuned for more on Franklyn in 2009. Update: It's already out on DVD.

Is that Rorschach? The trailer looks alright, i guess. This is a good example of why trailers should have better music and better editing to attract some viewers!

Steampunk is the boss I'm diggin this interpretation
Jaf on Jan 10, 2009
Something to look forward to there, might take awhile till it arrives in South Africa though!!!! I will be waiting though......
Bounca on Jan 10, 2009
Movie looks good. the music kind of sounds like a remix of the song "in a house, in a heartbeat" from the 28 days(weeks)later movies.
Redstrine on Jan 10, 2009
This film is being rather mismarketed. This alternative world noir is... er... well, let's just say, the story of this film actually takes place in this world. In London. Now. I've blogged quite a bit about it and put up some script excerpts too, if anybody is interested.
Brendon Connelly on Jan 10, 2009
Nice hats on the coppers. Interesting
ramez on Jan 10, 2009
looks good, but the narrative was a bit corny.
Matt Suhu on Jan 10, 2009
I was put off by the picture, simply due to the Rorschach resemblance. Also, he says that the girl is 16 yet Eva Green doesn't look a day younger than ~24. Other than that, the trailer looks absolutely phenomenal. I'm very interested in seeing more news about this in the future.
Will S. on Jan 10, 2009
Looks nothing like Rorschach.
Darunia on Jan 10, 2009
eva green is starting to piss me off. now people are just casting her cuz shes weird looking and they think its hot
mos on Jan 10, 2009
this is strange, poorly marketed, but still my interest is piqued.

This concept, cast, and cinematography looks amazing. Too bad they cast Ryan Phillipe in the lead. I absolutely can't stand his lack of acting ability.
Jimbo Slims on Jan 10, 2009
Trailer looks good. Love the hats.
cyn on Jan 10, 2009
Looks cool. I'm really willing to give this a chance.
BahHumbug on Jan 10, 2009
@11 Eva green isn't weird looking. She is beautiful, what's wrong with you?
Darunia on Jan 10, 2009
What's with all of the Rorschach comments? Look at a picture of the two and tell me what they have in common other then the color white and a trench-coat. Shit, Mike Meyers has a white mask and wears a coat.... is he Rorschach too?
BahHumbug on Jan 10, 2009
It'll either be fantastic, or absolutely painful to watch. I don't see any middle ground in there.
Rick on Jan 10, 2009
No more Mr.Quick!

looks better than the matrix alteast...seems smarter too!

all gangsters and private eyes in the 2-'s - 60's are rorschach
13 on Jan 10, 2009
I'm still not sure exactly what it is about, but it seems good enough to check out. I agree with the poorly marketed remarks. And is it really a sci-fi movie?
Dan W on Jan 10, 2009
Yeah it does look like another v for vendetta unfortunately for me I freaking hated that retarded ass movie.
Cody on Jan 10, 2009
Alex, please let everyone know when this movie does come to north america! i really want to see it!
Andy on Jan 10, 2009

JimD on Jan 10, 2009
i hated the last trailer, but now i'm excited!
Trystan on Jan 10, 2009
1st off, I've been in love with Eva Green ever since I watched The Dreamers. Watch it and you'll see why. Second, just because he wears a light colored mask with dark patches (eyeholes) is supposed to be a Rorschach rip-off?!?! C'mon guys, everything that appears similar at first doesn't make it a rip off. Dark City rip-off? So just because that movie was made means nothing else that remotely fits into that look can ever be made again? Seriously, try to enjoy the fantastical stories and visuals that movie makers bring to us! Without these kinds of movies, you naysayers wouldn't exist. Wait....hurm...

rizzy on Jan 11, 2009
This doesn't thrill me at all. But might be something I will pick up to rent.
midnightlight on Jan 11, 2009
Style looks fantastic. Story, acting, not so much. Looks like another "The Spirit" to me.
Hello Kitty on Jan 12, 2009
This kind of reminds me of a novel, "The Shift," by George Foy. I can't tell, of course, from the trailer, but that novel involved a super-virtual 1850s NYC, and how it started to bleed over into the book's present-day NYC.
Cloudface on Jan 12, 2009
my pants are a little wet from that. because, i remembered that "watchmen" was coming out this year as well (hopefully). Flic looks sweet. can't wait.

Dread Knight on Jan 12, 2009
Damn, that's two awesome looking movies with UK but not US releases i've seen trailers for in the last few weeks....someone needs to start picking these things up
Tuba on Jan 12, 2009
Yeah wtf this isn't badass. Obviously a movie targeting 13-year-olds. Either way, it looks like garbage, and I'm not being a hater just honest.
John M on Jan 12, 2009
Looks good but oddly familiar to Dark City and The Watchmen
Cameron on Jan 12, 2009
Retards... Every movie looks like Watchmen right now because you've still got the taste of the Watchmen dick in your mouths and the taste just overpowers everything else.
Rock Hardy on Jan 12, 2009
the production design looks good but that awful self important VO... it looks like it's trying just sooooo hard to be cool. and it's soooooooo PKD rote cliche... dark dystopian mental problems yadda yadda yadda... ...sigh...
jin choung on Jan 12, 2009
wtf, there is nothing SCI-FI about this movie. neo-noir works, but i would label it gothic fantasy
double knavery on Jan 12, 2009
@Redstrine: I'm thinking the same thing on the music - sounds just like 28 Days Later. Nice!
SeamusOldfield on Jan 12, 2009
Comment 52 is what I wanted to say.... This is NOT 'Must Watch' and not cool and not something new! I'm fed up with this kind of crap

Jonny on Jan 13, 2009
Holy shit. The protagonist looks amazing.
Xavier on Jan 13, 2009
i think it looks lame : he totally looks like roschach which is not a good thing, looks dated like if it should have come out 10 years ago, that whole line about a 16 year old and eva green is confusing, and ryan phillipe is usually in shit movies anyway, amiright?
kim on Jan 14, 2009
looks interesting. if nothing else, i'm in for the visuals.
dave13 on Jan 14, 2009
Eva green is simply to old for this part. A woman who is almost 30 and who looks her age playing a 16yo girl. Don't tell me they couldn't get someone else to play that role who is at least close to the right age.
Mike on Jan 14, 2009
Eva Green is not the 16 year old
Jonny on Jan 16, 2009
I loved V for Vendetta and hope this is as good. Looks promising.
Goldwing Guy on Jan 30, 2009
not 100% sold yet... trailer looks interesting enough though-definitely on the "keep an eye out for" list.
Nick S. on Feb 6, 2009
Little bit of Dune, Little bit of Dark City, Little bit of V For Vendetta, Little bit of Dark Crystal, Little bit of Brannagh's Henry V - just kidding. I'm sick of Sam Riley already. I'll wait for the DVD.
Lance on Feb 8, 2009
I've seen this, it played at the London Film Festival last year , Unfortunately It isn't as good as the trailer would suggest...but it is ambitious and visually impressive and you watch it and can't help admiring what he was trying to do...
butliere on Feb 9, 2009
This is awful. The trailer is completely misleading. The majority of the film isn't sci-fi at all in anyway in fact as it's a british film it's a bit like watching an episode of the bill. Only 2 people walked out of the cinema whilst I was there but I reckon there were only about 15 there to start with. I stayed until the end as I wanted to know what the 'twist' at the end was. I still don't completely understand the last 30 seconds of the film. I see dead people.

To bad I live in the U.S. I managed to find a torrent of it but I had to join some site to get the password. Waiting in anticipation for the dvd release.
idogis1 on Mar 7, 2009
It looks interesting - but I await what will be different about it. V For Vendetta was a fine movie, I got a bit of a Gormenghast type of feeling from watching the trailer...
r10t3r on Mar 10, 2009
okay 52 . this movie was made two years ago so dont be a dumbass. it has yet to be realeased in northamerica though. so how the hell would this be having " watchmen dick" in its mouth. unless they took elements from the graphic novel.

Pretty decent movie, very very hard to follow at parts, but it was pretty well done for such a seemingly low budget.
Liam on Jun 8, 2009
Me encantó. Se ha vuelto una de mis películas acompañantes.

Franklyn? More like Franklyn Mint: Source of mass produced, low quality knock offs.

Simply the worst movie I have seen........ever.

@76...Well, thank you, sir!
Toby on Oct 29, 2009
I have not yet seen this film, but I'm getting the feeling like this might be a bit like Iain Banks' novels Walking on Glass and The Bridge, wherein the main character is in the real modern day, but significant portions of the narrative take place in some fantasy world that really exists within one of the characters' heads. Perhaps also like Pan's Labyrinth, where Ophelia flipped between the real world of fascist Spain and her makebelieve world of the Faun. Regardless, the trailer looked pretty cool and I'm keen to see this one.
Bill Coffin on Oct 29, 2009
#3, Its not steampunk, you twat. Its neo-noir. Fuck steampunk in its brass well-oiled ass.

What does this trailer mean? Is the dude is the mask just a figment of somebody else in the trailers imagination? 3 different people? maybe just 1? No sir, I don't like it. MAybe after some research i can find something better... this trailer doesn't explain much, and the italic explanation underneath is just as vague. You know what's entertaining? http://www.thebeatlesneverbrokeup.com Tracks 6, 8, 11. I don't care what the story is; every bit of it is great. Three-thousand miles......

You know, it looks really really good, but I don't like the actors :\ Or.. the acting for that matter, but it still looks awsome, it's about time a new steampunk-ish movie came out.
Siaarn on Nov 7, 2009
I hope it's not as bad as V. Looks really cheesy though.
Alan on Nov 7, 2009
Gee, another movie about a whole bunch of violent traumatic shit a guy has to go through for the privilege of being be the property of some inept hot girl unable to save herself. Original. Neat mask can top hats though, that's a plus.
Brandon M. Sergent on Nov 14, 2009
No, Siaarn, you imbecile. Its NOT time for another "steampunish" move to come out. Again.... FUCK STEAMPUNK.
DougTheBug on Nov 16, 2009
I love how they stole the video from IGN. Way to go, FIrstshowing.net!
Nikko on Nov 17, 2009
Brandon M. Sergent how incredibly sexist of you...how about yet another movie about some inept dude trying to prove something to himself and the world by wresting out his demons through violence and attracting a girl who is his mirror image so they can live unhappily ever after...? Last I checked superheroes rescue men who somehow can't save themselves either....not everyone has the brains and brawn to get out of a scrape or no one would ever be a hostage, male or female alike... We would also have no need for heroes or hero flicks if we could all simply "save ourselves"...
Alicia on Nov 19, 2009
looks like crap
t on Feb 22, 2010
He's like the only atheist in the future with a bunch of gangs of people who have faith or beliefs in various things, which is why it's sort of sci-fi. But they don't necessarily worship Gods, certain aspects of their lives are worshiped, because the government in the movie knows that as long as the masses have faith in SOmEtHinG, they will have more control. Sort of like The Book of Eli.
